MNA in Layyah-II Secures Victory with Only 26% Voter Support in GE-2024

Layyah: In the recent general elections of 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-182 Layyah-II managed to secure the position with only 26% of the total registered voter support, highlighting the dynamics of Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system. Of the 547,727 registered voters in the constituency, the MNA received 141,973 votes, accounting for 43% of the 329,965 ballots cast.

According to the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency, the voter turnout was recorded at 60%. Despite the electoral victory, a significant portion of the electorate, 178,815 voters or 54%, endorsed other candidates in the election held on February 8, 2024. The runner-up in the race captured 36% of the votes, while the third candidate received 6%. The remaining candidates collectively garnered 12% of the vote, with 9,177 ballots, or 3%, declared invalid.

This analysis is part of the Free and Fair Election Network's (FAFEN) examination of electoral representativeness in Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. FAFEN highlights the implications of the FPTP system, where candidates win seats based on the highest vote total rather than a majority. This often results in elected members who do not possess majority support within their constituencies. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate legislative seats based on the proportion of votes received, ensuring a more comprehensive reflection of voter preferences. The data from Pakistan's GE-2024 elections underscore the gap between votes cast and representation achieved across the nation.
