Khushab: In the recent General Elections held in 2024, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from the constituency of NA-88 Khushab-II was elected with 82,577 votes, accounting for 29 percent of the 281,919 ballots cast. This number represents only 18 percent of the 451,307 registered voters within the constituency.
According to Free and Fair Election Network, the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency indicated a voter turnout of 62 percent. Despite the electoral victory, the MNA did not secure the majority support of those who participated in the election on February 8, 2024, as 190,929 voters, or 68 percent, cast their votes for other candidates, suggesting a lack of broad-based support for the winner.
In the results, the runner-up candidate garnered 23 percent of the votes, while the third-placed candidate obtained 20 percent. The remaining candidates collectively received 25 percent of the votes. Additionally, 8,413 ballots, or three percent of the total, were declared invalid and did not contribute to any candidate's total.
This report is part of a series by FAFEN examining the lack of representativeness in Pakistan's electoral outcomes. The analysis focuses on how the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system can distort representation in multi-candidate contests, where a majority of voters might feel unrepresented. This issue raises questions about legitimacy and could potentially lead to political instability.
