Lyari Residents Protest Against Inflation and Demand for Uninterrupted Gas Supply

Karachi, A demonstration organized by the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Lyari saw participants voicing strong demands for the government to combat inflation and ensure a consistent gas supply in Lyari. The protestors criticized the caretaker government for exacerbating the financial strain on citizens by increasing the prices of essential commodities, including petroleum products, electricity, and gas, following the precedent set by previous administrations. They warned that the government would bear responsibility for any resultant public unrest if immediate relief was not provided.

According to Pasban Democratic Party, senior leaders including Fazal Rabi Khan, Arif Jalab, and Akram Agria among others, addressed the crowd at Lemarket Chowk, emphasizing the dire need for economic relief as the holy month of Ramadan approaches. The leaders highlighted the extreme price hikes in essential goods such as ghee, oil, flour, sugar, pulses, rice, beverages, milk, onions, and tomatoes, calling for a 50% reduction in prices to alleviate the burden on low-income families. Additionally, they stressed the importance of replacing old and corroded gas lines to ensure a steady gas supply.

The demonstration shed light on the broader issues affecting Lyari’s residents, from extortion by police and administrative bodies to the challenges posed by transportation costs on the price of commodities. Moreover, leaders pointed out the irony of receiving substantial gas bills despite the absence of gas in areas like Mosi Lane, Picture Road, Miran Peer, and several others due to deteriorated infrastructure. The demand for the gas company to address these issues before Ramadan and ensure an uninterrupted supply of gas was made clear.

The PDP’s call to action reflects the community’s growing frustration with the ongoing economic challenges and the government’s perceived inaction. The leaders’ message underscored the urgent need for systemic changes to combat inflation and improve the quality of life for the people of Lyari.
