Bahawalpur, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission, successfully concluded the first-ever Floodlight Intervarsity Women’s Football Championship at its Abbasia Campus. The four-day event, which saw significant participation from universities across Pakistan, ended with Lahore College for Women University clinching a narrow victory over the University of Lahore in the final match.
According to The Islamia University of Bahawalpur Pakistan, the championship featured eight teams, including prominent institutions like Punjab University Lahore, University of Management Technology Lahore, Bahauddin Zakaria University Multan, University of Karachi, and University of Agriculture Faisalabad. The tournament highlighted the competitive spirit and talent in women’s football, with Lahore College for Women University defeating University of Punjab Lahore 3-0 in the first semi-final and University of Lahore securing a 5-0 win against University of Karachi in the second.
The event was not only a showcase of sportsmanship and team spirit but also an opportunity for community engagement. Notables such as Prof. Dr. Shazia Anjum and Prof. Dr. Rubina Bhatti, deans at the Islamia University, along with Muhammad Farooq, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Bahawalpur, and representatives from the Higher Education Commission were present at the final match. Their participation underscored the university’s commitment to promoting sports and physical education among women.
At the conclusion of the championship, the winning team was awarded a trophy in a ceremony attended by educators, administrators, and sports officials from the region. This inaugural floodlight event marked a significant milestone in advancing women’s football at the university level in Pakistan, promoting not only athletic excellence but also contributing to the empowerment of women through sports.
