Chinese Delegation Visits Centre for South Asian Studies at Punjab University

Lahore, A three-member delegation from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing visited the Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS) at the University of the Punjab on June 3, 2024. The visit highlighted the potential for collaborative research and underscored the strategic and cultural significance of South Asia in global studies.

According to University of the Punjab, the delegation comprised Dr. Tong Tao, Senior Researcher; Dr. Li Dongdong, Associate Researcher; and Dr. Ai Wanqiao, Assistant Researcher. They were accompanied by Dr. Muhammad Hameed, an Associate Professor from the Archeology Department at Punjab University. Prof. Dr. Naheed S. Goraya, Director of CSAS, welcomed the guests and led discussions on the rich archaeological heritage of South Asia, its historical cities, and its role in early urbanized societies.

During the visit, Dr. Goraya emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of archaeology and South Asian studies, which offers a comprehensive understanding of the region’s cultural heritage and historical development. She highlighted the CSAS’s potential to initiate critical and collaborative research projects with the Chinese Academy of Social Science. The conversation also covered the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), noting its role in enhancing Pakistan’s strategic importance and strengthening ties with China.

Dr. Tong expressed the importance of understanding the historical and theoretical developments in archaeology within South Asia, acknowledging the region’s significance due to its vast array of archaeological sites that chronicle thousands of years of human history. The delegation showed a keen interest in future collaborative efforts with CSAS, indicating a fruitful path ahead for both institutions in exploring the rich historical tapestry of South Asia.

The visit marks a significant step toward fostering international academic partnerships and enhancing the global understanding of South Asian historical and cultural contexts.
