IIUI Lecture Sheds Light on Marriage Laws in South Asia

Islamabad: An enlightening lecture on the legal framework of marriage in South Asia was held at the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), attracting academics and researchers keen to explore the intersection of law and tradition in the region. The event, organized by the Shariah Academy, took place at the Allama Iqbal Auditorium, located within the Faisal Mosque Campus.

Dr. Zubair Abbasi, a faculty member at Royal Holloway, University of London, delivered the lecture titled "The Legal Nature of Marriage and Restitution of Conjugal Rights in South Asia." Dr. Abbasi provided an in-depth examination of how marriage and conjugal rights are interpreted within South Asian legal systems, referencing landmark judicial decisions that have shaped these interpretations.

In his address, Dr. Abbasi highlighted the historical impact of Anglo-Saxon legal traditions on Islamic Shariah in South Asian jurisdictions. He analyzed the complex interplay between Islamic principles and colonial legal frameworks, showcasing how legislative developments and judicial interpretations have evolved over time.

The lecture also included a comparative analysis by discussing the approach of European courts, particularly in England, to provide a broader perspective on the subject.

The event was well-attended by IIUI faculty members, along with external academics and researchers. Following the presentation, a lively question-and-answer session enabled attendees to engage with Dr. Abbasi on various legal and jurisprudential aspects. The session concluded with an informal gathering over tea and refreshments.
