Karachi, Habib University has launched a lecture series titled ‘Reshaping Philanthropy in the Islamic World,’ featuring Dr. Hasnain Walji as the keynote speaker. The series, aimed at exploring the role of higher education in sustainable development supported by philanthropy, commenced with Dr. Walji’s lecture on ‘Universities as Nurseries of Ethical Leadership and Social Responsibility for the Advancement of Muslim Societies.’
According to Habib University, Dr. Walji, the Executive Director of United Global Initiative, delivered an inaugural address that emphasized philanthropy as a transformative rather than merely charitable act, rooted in the teachings of the Quran. He challenged the audience, particularly the students of Habib University, to view themselves as future leaders who will reshape the concept of philanthropy to empower communities.
Dr. Walji delineated the importance of knowledge and wisdom in the modern age, quoting Alvin Toffler to emphasize that knowledge, unlike other resources, grows through sharing. He outlined the transformative potential of universities, such as Habib University, to equip leaders not only with skills for the job market but also with the ethical compass to navigate complex challenges.
Highlighting the influence of educational institutions in societal advancement, Dr. Walji drew on the example of Desmond Tutu to show how education can prevent crises. He underscored that the costs of ignorance far outweigh the investments in education, making a powerful case for the impact of knowledge and learning.
The event also focused on the ethos of learning and personal development, with Dr. Walji commending Habib University’s Yohsin philosophy, which is inspired by the concept of Ihsan, or doing beautiful acts. He spoke to the students about the significance of integrating ethics with their skills and knowledge for holistic personal and global development.
Dr. Walji concluded his talk by stressing the virtues of empathy, compassion, and integrity as foundational to philanthropy and education. He lauded Habib University for its role in nurturing future changemakers and emphasized the importance of reinforcing the spirit of giving in higher education.
The ‘Reshaping Philanthropy in the Islamic World’ lecture series is set to continue fostering dialogue on the intersection of education, ethical leadership, and philanthropy, contributing to the broader discourse on societal advancement in Muslim societies.
