Dubai: India coach Gautam Gambhir has minimized the significance of the highly anticipated match against Pakistan in the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, emphasizing that every game in the tournament holds equal importance. As India aims for a third Champions Trophy title, Gambhir insists that the focus remains on the overall mission rather than a single game.
According to a statement by International Cricket Council, Gambhir remarked on the emotional intensity often associated with India-Pakistan matches but stressed that the contest is merely one step towards achieving the ultimate goal. “The mission to go to Dubai is to win the Champions Trophy,” Gambhir told Star Sports, underscoring that their approach to each game is crucial for success.
The tournament, featuring just eight teams, places India in a challenging Group A alongside Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. Only two teams will advance to the knockout stages, highlighting the need for consistent performance.
Gambhir acknowledged the distinct challenge posed by the Champions Trophy compared to the 50-over World Cup, noting the slim margin for error. “Every game is a make-or-break,” he said, emphasizing the necessity of a strong start.
India’s squad for the tournament includes seasoned players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who played pivotal roles in India’s 2013 Champions Trophy victory. Gambhir expressed confidence in their ability to lead the team, stating, “They’ve got to play a massive role.”
India’s fixtures in the group stage include matches against Bangladesh on February 20, Pakistan on February 23, and New Zealand on March 2, all set to take place in Dubai.
