Earth Day 2024 Highlights Wildlife Conservation Efforts in AJK National Parks

Lahore, Professor Zulfiqar Ali and his team visited the wildlife-protected areas in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to explore national parks and present research papers at the 42nd Congress of Zoology. The visit aimed to raise awareness, inspire change, and foster a deeper connection with nature in celebration of Earth Day 2024.

According to University of the Punjab, the team visited Machiara National Park, one of AJK’s notable conservation areas, renowned for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. It covers 13,532 hectares and is home to a diverse range of animal species, including the Common Leopard, Himalayan Ibex, Grey Goral, Musk Deer, Rhesus Monkey, Grey Langur, Black Bear, and Yellow-throated Marten. The park also supports a wide variety of bird species, including the Western Horned Tragopan, Cheer, Koklass, Monal, Kaleej, Chukar, Himalayan Snowcock, Snow Partridge, and Himalayan Griffon Vulture.

The visit was an opportunity to explore various habitats within the conservation area, such as forests, wetlands, and grasslands. The team met with Director Wildlife Naeem Iftikhar Dar and Mr. Hammad to discuss the park’s history, ongoing conservation efforts, and current challenges. They learned about different wildlife conservation strategies and the population status of various animal species, providing valuable insights into the region’s biodiversity.

The meeting with the wildlife staff revealed their dedication and passion for conservation.
