Department of Family Medicine creates awareness on timely treatment of Sepsis

Lahore, May 16, 2022 (PPI-OT):To create the awareness and understanding of sepsis and its timely treatment, the Department of Family Medicine at the University College of Medicine and Dentistry (UCMD) recently arranged an online lecture on “Sepsis in Adults”. Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection which is a life-threatening medical emergency. The infections that lead to sepsis most often start in the lung, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract.

This informative lecture was delivered by Dr. Khurram Qazi (Consultant Emergency Physician, Flinders Medical Center, Adelaide, Australia), and was organized by Dr. Shahid Waheed (HoD, Family Medicine) with the coordination of Dr. Khadijah Mukhtar (Assistant Professor, Department of Medical Education) under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Mahwish Arooj (Principal, UCMD). Several faculty members from the Department of Family Medicine, Community Medicine, Pharmacology, Research Cell and clinical and non-clinical staff members attended the session.

While delivering the lecture, Dr. Qazi explained the Sepsis disease and its early detection. He also elaborated on its clinical features, various classifications, assessment, management, vasopressors, antibiotics and source control. He said that early recognition of Sepsis is important for timely initiation of treatment as a delay in antibiotic treatment has been documented to result in increased mortality.

He further talked about symptoms, risk factors and predictive tools of this infection. He also briefed the participants about the strategy to respond with early consideration of vasopressors, early antibiotics and their monitoring.
