Consanguine marriages still prevalent but form an inverse relation with household income in Pakistan – Gallup Pakistan Report on marriages in the family and choice involved in that decision

Islamabad, September 12, 2023 (PPI-OT): Gallup Pakistan has released findings from its Nationally Representative survey conducted in the first 20 days of July 2023. Following are the key learnings from this report:

3 out of 4 Pakistanis aged 18 and above are married.

Nearly twice as many individuals (65%) are married within their families than those married outside the family (34%).

While parents have a high decision power (86%) when it comes to family marriages, 79% Pakistanis willingly agreed to marriages within family.

59% Pakistanis report meeting their spouse before marriage; moreover, 32% migrated to different cities/districts after marriage.

Between 90-94% Pakistanis report being quite satisfied with their spouse across a variety of criteria.
