Chairman BoG tells postgraduate international students to excel in research

Lahore, August 22, 2023 (PPI-OT): Developing nations are in dire need of research, science and technology for prosperity. Additionally, human capacity development and steward leadership are also essential necessities of the desired progression. And for all the above to be realized, academic institutions ought to be at the top of the game. This is according to Mr Awais Raoof (Chairman, BoG, UOL) who also believes that the holistic progress of all societies requires strategic alliances from within countries and across borders.

While meeting postgraduate international students from The Gambia and Uganda at different forums, Mr Raoof said, “UOL is progressing in the three core functions of a university i.e., research, teaching and community service. In 2022, our faculty published more than 2500 research articles and we were 2nd overall in the country”. “Since you are all PhD students, you should perfect your research skills and PhD is mainly a self-learning process. Work with your professors to research and publish,” he advised.

He further stated that Pakistan and Africa share a lot in common and therefore, collaboration with African governments and universities such as the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) and the University of the Gambia (UTG) is not by mistake but rather for a strategic cause. “Our challenges as developing nations are the same. My desire is to see you acquire the necessary skills and go back to your countries to provide solutions to societal challenges. So far, we have 9 PhD scholars out of the 10 scholarships from UTG and 4 out of 10 from IUIU and more will join soon,” he remarked.

The University of Lahore (UOL) signed MoUs with IUIU and UTG in 2012 (renewed in March 2022) and 2021 respectively in which UOL offered multiple scholarships to both institutions. In a recent meeting that was also attended by Prof Dr Syed Amir Gilani (Pro-Rector, Allied Health Sciences and Director, International Linkages) and Dr Shahid Bashir (HoD, University Institute of Food Science and Technology), Mr Raoof offered two more scholarships in MS Nursing and MPhil in Public Health to UTG. The additional scholarships were given in response to the request made by Prof Mohammad Faqir Anjum (Former Vice Chancellor, UTG) during his recent courtesy visit to UOL.
