British consultant sheds light on advantages of robotic surgery at ULTH 

Lahore, May 16, 2022 (PPI-OT):An international seminar on Robotic Surgery was organized by the Department of Surgery at the University of Lahore Teaching Hospital (ULTH) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mansab Ali (HoD Surgery) on February 22, 2022. Dr. Jawad Ahmed (British national, Consultant General and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgeon at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust) was the key speaker at the event. Dr. Ahmed was recently appointed as the first robotic HPB proctor (trainer) in the UK.

The seminar was attended by Dr. Zahid Pervaiz (Medical Superintendent, ULTH), Prof. Mansab Ali (HoD Surgery), Prof. Rizwan Saleem (Professor, Surgical Unit II), Dr. Amir Usman (Associate Professor), Dr. Javeria Usman (Assistant Professor), Dr. Abid Janjua (Assistant Professor), Dr. Ahmad Raza (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Urology), Dr. Haroon Ghos (HoD, Urology, UCM), Dr. Sohail (Assistant Professor, Dermatology), Dr. Atif Kazmi (HoD, Dermatology), postgraduate trainees, house officers of multiple departments and medical students.

During the seminar, Dr. Ahmed exchanged his experiences of robotic surgery with the audience. He also shared the videos of robotic assisted whipple’s procedures and hepatectomies. Discussing the advantages of robotic surgery, he compared open, laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. Moreover, he agreed to train postgraduate trainees for robotic surgeries and offered electives at his centre to the medical students.

The senior consultants discussed the cost effectiveness and outcomes of robotic surgery with the speaker, while students and postgraduate trainees asked many questions about training in robotic surgery and exchange programs with the Royal College. The event ended with the shield presentation to Dr. Ahmad.

Dr. Ahmed signs MoU with UOL

Prior to the seminar, the University of Lahore (UOL) signed an MoU with Dr. Ahmad for taking him on board as an honorary professor and international faculty member. The MoU focuses on building international strategic partnerships aimed at driving improvements and research in healthcare delivery, surgical workforce development and training targeting to address the rapidly changing skills needed in the field of surgery.

On the occasion, Mr. Awais Raoof (Chairman, BoG) expressed happiness over the inclusion of Dr. Ahmed as a faculty member of the varsity. He also hoped that the contribution of the international staff will enhance the learning outcomes of the postgraduate trainees and medical students of the university. He also agreed to set up a robotic surgery centre at ULTH while Dr. Ahmed gave nod to do monthly live sessions on Zoom with medical students and postgraduate.
