KARACHI, In a statement marking International Human Rights Day, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), emphasized his party’s commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights. This focus, he noted, will be a key feature in the PPP’s manifesto for the upcoming general elections.
According to Pakistan People’s Party, Zardari highlighted the efforts of his party in safeguarding human rights through constitutional measures. He recalled the contributions of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in ensuring the protection of these rights, as embodied in the constitution which guarantees equal rights to all citizens. The PPP Chairman pointed out that the PPP-led government in Sindh has implemented a comprehensive Human Rights Policy and established the Treaty Implementation Cell (TIC) under the Human Rights Department. This cell is tasked with enforcing international human rights treaties ratified by Pakistan.
Furthermore, Zardari mentioned the provision of free legal assistance to victims of human rights abuses in Sindh, emphasizing the PPP’s commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens, particularly minorities. He affirmed that mechanisms are in place to address human rights violations as they occur, with a zero-tolerance policy for atrocities against women, children, and vulnerable groups.
The PPP Chairman also called attention to ongoing human rights issues in Kashmir and Palestine, urging the international community to address these violations which he described as threats to world peace and an affront to humanity.
Concluding his message, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari reaffirmed the PPP’s dedication to continuing the struggle for human rights, in line with the vision of the party’s founders, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. He mentioned the establishment of the Human Rights Cell within the party, which focuses on human rights issues within Pakistan.
