Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Addresses Key Issues at SZABIST Q/A Session in Islamabad

Islamabad, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), addressed a range of critical issues during a question-and-answer session titled “Chuno Nayi Soch Ko” at the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST). He focused on various national challenges, including climate change, economic crises, and the need for inclusive development.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Chairman Bilawal emphasized the PPP’s commitment to addressing Pakistan’s most pressing problems, including climate change, poverty, inflation, and unemployment. He highlighted the vulnerability of Pakistan to climate change, noting that the country, despite contributing less than 1% to global carbon emissions, is at the forefront of climate risks due to its significant Himalayan ice reserves. Bilawal stressed the need for international cooperation to address these challenges.

The session also covered Pakistan’s economic crisis. Bilawal criticized traditional trickle-down economics and advocated for empowering the downtrodden instead of the elite. He pointed out the inefficient operation of certain government ministries and the substantial subsidies given to the elite, proposing to redirect these funds towards the masses. He emphasized a shift in development expenditure and the necessity of framing the economic framework around a ‘Climate Resilient Pakistan.’

Bilawal expressed the need for infrastructure improvements in irrigation, agriculture, communication, and energy to combat climate change and generate employment. He mentioned bureaucratic and elite resistance to change but reaffirmed the PPP’s commitment to spending on public welfare projects like the ‘Benazir Mazdoor Card’, ‘Benazir Kissan Card’, BISP, and solar energy parks.

In response to questions, Bilawal shared insights from his travels across Pakistan, especially his experiences in Gilgit Baltistan, where climate change impacts are evident. He proposed a shift from traditional development planning, emphasizing the importance of constructing green energy parks in every district and criticized the current political landscape for fostering hate and division.

Addressing the economic agenda, Bilawal reiterated the PPP’s foundational philosophy of ‘Roti, Kapra Aur Makaan’ (Food, Clothing, and Shelter) and the need for a fresh perspective in its implementation. He stressed the importance of moving beyond politics of vendetta and revenge to address the country’s economic and terrorism crises.

Discussing social welfare, Bilawal highlighted the ‘Benazir Mazdoor Card’ and ‘Benazir Kissan Card’ initiatives, aiming to provide economic security to the people. He also commented on the lack of seriousness by current rulers in addressing the country’s crises, emphasizing the need for policies that favor the general population over the elite.

On the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Bilawal praised its role as a regional standard in social safety nets and its empowerment of women. He talked about the PPP’s Peoples Housing Initiative, aimed at providing housing for flood victims in Sindh, as a step towards women empowerment and economic stability.

Bilawal also addressed the need to tackle brain drain by equipping the youth with modern skills and creating job opportunities abroad. He underscored the PPP’s commitment to youth representation in politics and the importance of giving them a voice in decision-making.

In his role as Foreign Minister, Bilawal mentioned efforts to encourage digital platform monetization in Pakistan and the importance of investing in communication infrastructure for economic development.

The session at SZABIST offered a comprehensive overview of the PPP’s vision for addressing Pakistan’s multifaceted challenges, with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari articulating the party’s strategies for economic, environmental, and social reform.
