AKU Dean Dr. Adil Haider Honored with Johns Hopkins Distinguished Alumnus Award

Karachi, Dr. Adil Haider, Dean of the Medical College at Aga Khan University (AKU) and a proud alumnus of the same institution, has been presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the esteemed Johns Hopkins University. The award comes in recognition of Dr. Haider’s outstanding contributions as a surgeon, trauma disparities researcher, and his impactful leadership during the severe floods that affected Pakistan in 2022.

According to a news release by Aga Khan University, Dr. Haider’s path, which began with his graduation from AKU in 1998, has been marked by dedication and achievements. He has not only exhibited excellence in the realm of medicine but has also been instrumental in addressing disparities in healthcare for the underprivileged. While at Johns Hopkins Medicine, Dr. Haider and his team made significant strides in identifying disparities in trauma injury outcomes, paving the way for the emergence of surgical disparities research.

Dr. Haider’s contributions to healthcare are vast and far-reaching. He has mentored over 150 research trainees, produced more than 400 peer-reviewed publications, and has spearheaded research projects funded by grants exceeding twenty million dollars. Beyond AKU, Dr. Haider holds the distinguished role of Director of Disparities and Emerging Trauma Systems at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the USA. His credentials include visiting professorships at over 30 universities, leadership roles like the Association for Academic Surgery President, and his position as the current Deputy Editor of JAMA Surgery, a leading scientific journal. Additionally, he chaired the academic board of Pakistan’s Medical Regulator (PMDC) from 2020-2022.

Receiving the Distinguished Alumnus Award, Dr. Adil Haider commented on the honor, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of his teams both in Pakistan and the US. He remarked, “it is an honour to be able to represent AKU at such a notable occasion, and to showcase the impactful work being done in Pakistan… This award is a testament to the incredible teamwork displayed by our staff, trainees and faculty which I am so grateful to be a part of.
