Karachi: The Aga Khan University celebrated its 38th Convocation in Pakistan by graduating 461 students from 18 degree programmes and formally installing Princess Zahra Aga Khan as the institution's first Pro-Chancellor. Her role will be pivotal in guiding the university’s efforts to enhance the quality of life through education and research.
According to Aga Khan University, the event marked the graduation of the first cohort from the Institute for Educational Development’s Bachelor of Education programme, designed to prepare graduates for effective teaching in varied school environments. The university’s Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan, emphasized the dual responsibility and opportunity for the institution and its graduates to leverage knowledge for human betterment.
Princess Zahra Aga Khan highlighted AKU’s expanding presence across Pakistan, noting the integral role its healthcare professionals, educators, and researchers play in communities from Karachi to Gilgit. Addressing Pakistan's development challenges, AKU remains committed to access and excellence, with women comprising nearly 70 percent of the graduating class, addressing the gender gap in education.
Valedictorian Muhammad Taha Nasim commended the faculty for pushing students to achieve excellence with empathy. AKU alumni are addressing workforce shortages, notably in nursing leadership, where AKU graduates occupy significant positions in approximately 80 schools of nursing and midwifery.
In 2025, the university secured over USD$100 million in research funding, reflecting its esteemed research capabilities. Additionally, 27 faculty members were ranked among the top two percent of scientists globally, according to a Stanford University study.
Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, President of AKU, praised Pakistan’s youth for their inclusivity, technological fluency, and ability to view technology as an opportunity. AKU’s financial assistance program supported 72 percent of students in the last academic year, ensuring access for talented individuals with limited financial resources.
Outstanding graduates Noorish Khan, Syeda Tasmiya Mohiuddin, Dr. Hamzah Jehanzeb, and Sara Karim Sadruddin received Best Graduate Awards in their respective fields. The ceremony also featured Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, AKU’s Founding President, and recognized faculty contributions to innovation and leadership, with Professor Emeritus Mushtaq Ahmed receiving the President’s Medal for his distinguished service.
