Karachi: Aafia Movement leader Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui urged the Pakistani government and its citizens to unite in efforts to secure the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, who has been imprisoned for 22 years. At a convention held in Karachi, she paid tribute to the activists supporting Dr. Siddiqui and emphasized the need for collective action to bring her home.
According to Aafia Movement, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui addressed attendees at the Aafia Movement Convention and Award Ceremony, stressing the importance of advocating for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s freedom. She highlighted the enduring support from volunteers and activists, urging continued efforts to overcome obstacles to her release. Dr. Fowzia called on the government to take decisive action, emphasizing the collective responsibility to ensure Dr. Aafia’s return to Pakistan.
Clive Stafford Smith, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s American lawyer, also spoke at the event, expressing gratitude to those supporting the case. He described Dr. Aafia’s situation as one of the most severe cases of injustice he has encountered. He expressed hope for her release by 2026, noting that the case is currently in a New York court with substantial evidence supporting her innocence. Smith highlighted the need for continued advocacy and support, including signature campaigns and efforts to restore her basic rights.
During the convention, awards were presented to various individuals for their contributions to the cause. Prominent figures such as Abdul Hakim Quaid, Haleem Adil Sheikh, and Muhammad Zubair were recognized for their active roles. The event concluded with a pledge from attendees to continue their efforts to #BringAafiaHome, including a resolution and a blood pact signed by hundreds of volunteers.
