Naushahro Feroze: The Member of the National Assembly (MNA) elected from NA-205 Naushahro Feroze-I in Pakistan's General Election of 2024 received 126,056 votes, constituting 57% of the 221,169 ballots cast. However, this figure equates to only 26% of the total 477,319 registered voters in the constituency. The electoral process in Pakistan follows a First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system, where winning merely requires obtaining the highest number of votes, not a majority.
According to the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency indicated a voter turnout of 46%. NA-205 was among 70 constituencies out of 266 where the winner managed to secure at least 50% of the votes cast. Nevertheless, 92,296 voters, or 42%, did not vote for the winning candidate. The winner's share among all registered voters remained at 26%.
The candidate who finished in second place garnered 25% of the ballots cast. The candidate in third position received 12%, while the remaining candidates together captured 5% of the votes. Additionally, 2,817 votes, or 1%, were deemed invalid.
FAFEN's analysis, part of a broader examination of electoral representativeness across Pakistan's National Assembly constituencies, highlights that under the FPTP system, candidates with the most votes win even without securing a majority of all votes cast. This often results in elected members who may not have majority support in their constituencies. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate legislative seats in accordance with the vote shares obtained by parties or candidates, potentially ensuring that a wider array of voter preferences is represented in elected bodies. The data from Pakistan's GE-2024 reveals a documented gap between votes cast and representation secured across all 266 constituencies.
