Islamabad: Pakistan’s national cricket team has appointed Shaheen Afridi as the new captain for One Day Internationals, according to an announcement made by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The 25-year-old pacer is set to lead the team in an upcoming three-match series against South Africa, kicking off on November 4.
Afridi succeeds Mohammad Rizwan, whose tenure saw initial success but ultimately ended following a series of defeats. Rizwan had taken charge in October 2024 and celebrated significant victories, including a historic series win against Australia and a sweep against South Africa. However, the team faltered in subsequent tournaments, including the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and suffered losses in tours to New Zealand and the West Indies.
Afridi, who debuted in 2018, has quickly become a key figure in Pakistan’s bowling lineup, with 131 wickets in 66 ODIs. His leadership experience includes captaining the T20I side in early 2024 during a closely contested series against New Zealand.
The decision to appoint Afridi was made during a meeting in Islamabad with key figures such as head coach Mike Hesson and Director of High Performance Aqib Javed. This marks a new chapter for Pakistan cricket as they look to rebuild and achieve success under Afridi’s leadership.
