Lahore: The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) in Lahore convened a Technical Committee Meeting of the Pakistan-Netherland Dairy Development Center (PNDDC) to discuss strategies for advancing the dairy sector and enhancing the livelihoods of the livestock farming community. The meeting focused on addressing current issues in animal health and disease diagnostics, identifying future challenges, and prioritizing key areas for development.
According to the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, the meeting was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Masood Rabbani, who emphasized the importance of collaboration with the private sector to improve the profitability and production of dairy farms. Participants, including experts from UVAS and FrieslandCampina Engro Pakistan Limited, discussed the need for increased farmer awareness and the adoption of modern farming practices to boost the sector.
Saud Pasha, Director of Corporate Affairs and Dairy Development Manager at FrieslandCampina Engro Pakistan Limited, highlighted the company's objectives and its contributions to the dairy industry. He noted that UVAS serves as a critical hub for education and research, which will help in disseminating knowledge among livestock farmers to enhance their livelihoods.
Prof Dr Masood Rabbani outlined various initiatives, including the proposed conversion of UVAS's Ravi Campus Pattoki into an Agro-Livestock Tourism Resort. This facility aims to offer education and experiences related to poultry, dairy, livestock, fisheries, and wildlife management, which will benefit students, researchers, and families from multiple educational institutions.
Dr Humaira Iqbal discussed the PNDDC project's core activities, which include research and innovation, strategy and policy development, farmer education and training, and industry-academia collaboration. The meeting participants recommended initiatives such as livestock farmer training and education, short courses and certifications, and the creation of success story clips to inspire other professionals within the sector.
