Guyana, As the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, Afghanistan’s cricket team, led by skipper Rashid Khan, is focusing solely on one game at a time, dismissing the mounting semi-final expectations. Despite their rising profile and a formidable spin bowling lineup, the team remains grounded, concentrating on their immediate matches rather than the broader tournament predictions.
According to International Cricket Council, Rashid Khan expressed a cautious optimism regarding the team’s prospects. While acknowledging the positive outlook from cricket analysts who favor Afghanistan as a semi-final contender, Rashid emphasized the importance of staying focused on the present challenges rather than getting caught up in the potential outcomes. He recalled the team’s performance in the last ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India, where Afghanistan defeated major teams like Sri Lanka and Pakistan and narrowly missed a semi-final spot by one game. These achievements have bolstered the team’s belief in their capabilities.
Rashid also highlighted the team’s preparation for the upcoming World Cup. Aside from his and a few teammates’ participation in the IPL, the majority of the team engaged in the domestic Qosh Tepa National T20 Cup in May, which provided valuable match practice. Moreover, arriving in Guyana two weeks prior to their first match allowed for additional acclimatization and training.
Afghanistan is set to begin their campaign in a challenging Group C, facing teams such as West Indies, New Zealand, and PNG, with their opening match against Uganda. Rashid’s strategy is to take the tournament one game at a time, focusing on making sound decisions on the field without the burden of expectations about advancing to later rounds.
