University of Sindh’s English Institute Celebrates Athletics with Annual Sports Gala

Jamshoro, The Institute of English Language and Literature at the University of Sindh has kicked off its annual sports gala in Jamshoro, attracting hundreds of students and faculty members to the Hyder Bakhsh Pavilion. This two-day event, featuring a wide range of sports competitions, underscores the university’s commitment to holistic student development beyond the classroom.

According to University of Sindh, the gala was inaugurated with great enthusiasm by both participants and spectators. Vice-Chancellor Professor (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Siddiq Kalhoro graced the event as a special guest, with notable attendance from Dean Faculty of Arts Professor Dr. Muhammad Khan Sangi, and Director of the Institute of English Language and Literature Professor Dr. Abdul Fattah Soomro, among others. More than 200 students competed in events such as marathon races, cricket, table tennis, badminton, chess, and tug of war, demonstrating the vibrant spirit of the university’s community.

In his opening remarks, Vice Chancellor Dr. Kalhoro highlighted the vital role of sports in societal upliftment and the importance of maintaining physical and mental health through active participation in sports. He emphasized the university’s efforts to promote sports alongside academic pursuits to ensure students’ well-being. Dr. Kalhoro encouraged students to engage in sports not just for physical fitness but as a means to develop resilience and mental strength.

Director Dr. Abdul Fattah Soomro spoke on the necessity of a healthy mind for a fulfilling life, noting the English department’s initiative in organizing the sports gala as part of its commitment to fostering a positive learning environment. He stressed the significance of extracurricular activities in student development, stating that academic progress alone is insufficient to address the challenges facing the country.

The sports gala continued with spirited competitions, including running races and tug-of-war, followed by cricket matches for both male and female student teams. The event is set to conclude with a ceremony awarding prizes to the winners, celebrating their achievements and the collective spirit of sportsmanship among the students.
