Australia Surpasses India in World Test Championship Standings with Sweep Over Pakistan

Sydney, Australia has overtaken India in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 standings following their comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Sydney Test. This win not only solidified Australia’s position at the top of the World Test Championship table but also marked a continuation of their dominant performance in the world of cricket.

According to International Cricket Council, the Australian team, led by Pat Cummins, has been in exceptional form, having secured two significant ICC titles in 2023 – the World Test Championship Final and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Their success streak continued into 2024 with an emphatic win against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The New Year’s Test saw Australia complete a 3-0 series sweep against Pakistan, propelling them to the top of the World Test Championship standings with 56.25 percentage points. This victory pushed India, who had a 1-1 series draw in South Africa, to the second spot with 54.16 percentage points.

Pakistan, currently placed at No. 6, faced a decrease in their standing, dropping from 45.83 to 36.66 percentage points following the Sydney defeat. The visitors initially put up a competitive score of 313 in their first innings, with notable contributions from Mohammad Rizwan, Agha Salman, and Aamer Jamal.

Australia’s reply in their first innings totaled 299, owing to Jamal’s impressive bowling figures of 6/69. Despite a marginal lead of 14 runs for Pakistan going into the second innings, the Australian bowlers, led by Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon, dramatically turned the game by bowling out Pakistan for 115.

The Australian batsmen, notably David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne, made quick work of the modest target set by Pakistan, achieving the victory on the fourth day of the Test match.

This series sweep by Australia not only cements their top position in the World Test Championship standings but also underlines their continued excellence in Test cricket.
