Karachi, November 11: A crucial tripartite meeting under the auspices of the Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP) discussed the pivotal role of multinational enterprises in supporting employer organizations and facilitating workers’ unions.
According to Employers’ Federation of Pakistan, former president of the EFP, underscored the significance of the Multinational Enterprises Declaration in guiding businesses, government agencies, workers, and employer organizations. The declaration focuses on training, employment, creating a conducive environment, and improving labor quality. Aziz emphasized the declaration’s role in expanding social impact and fostering good work practices.
Labor Secretary KP, Fakhar Alam, along with other prominent figures such as Chairman EFPKP Dr. Yusuf Sarwar, and President of Pakistan Workers Federation KP, Rahim Khan, addressed the meeting. They highlighted the need for multinational companies in Pakistan to adhere to the declaration, supporting employer organizations and providing facilities to labor unions. Alam commended the EFP’s efforts in raising awareness and implementing the declaration’s principles.
Dr. Yusuf Sarwar, Chairman EFPKP, outlined the meeting’s aim to increase awareness and understanding among stakeholders on how businesses can positively contribute to development and responsible entrepreneurship. The ILO’s support in organizing the program and promoting social dialogue was also acknowledged.
Rahim Khan focused on the necessity of bilateral talks in the face of current economic challenges, emphasizing joint efforts between workers and employers. Other speakers, including Provincial President Muhammad Iqbal, stressed the importance of complying with labor laws, addressing unemployment, and enhancing social security.
Mohammad Ishaq, former president of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urged businesses to adopt the MNE Declaration and adhere to international labor standards for sustainability. He proposed making labor laws more industry-friendly. Director Labor Muhammad Irfan highlighted the importance of a working relationship and social dialogue among stakeholders and mentioned plans for setting up a health and safety unit.
The meeting represented a significant step in promoting responsible business practices, emphasizing the need for multinational enterprises to align with international labor standards and support both employers and employees.
