Islamabad, The International Islamic University (IIU) wrapped up its Sports Gala with a vibrant closing ceremony at the male Campus, attended by the esteemed Saudi Ambassador, H.E. Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki, who commended the institution for its efforts in organizing the event.
According to a news release by International Islamic University, the Ambassador praised the university’s president and administration for hosting a commendable sports gala, highlighting the vigorous involvement of both domestic and international students. H.E. Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki noted the decreasing interest in sports due to the prevalence of technology and praised IIU for its initiatives in promoting physical activities among the youth. Speaking about the robust ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, he accentuated the longstanding and amiable relations the two countries have fostered over the years.
The week-long sports gala witnessed the participation of approximately 1000 students from Pakistan and over 30 different countries. The event comprised of contests in over 30 sports categories, featuring more than 50 departments from 11 faculties competing in various indoor, outdoor, and athletic competitions. The Faculty of Engineering and Technology emerged as the champions of the sports gala, with the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Languages and Literature securing second and third places respectively. Among the many performances, a display of traditional martial arts by Indonesian students stood out, receiving significant applause.
IIU’s President, H.E. Dr. Hathal Homoud Al-Otaibi, in his address, characterized the Sports Gala 2023 as a significant milestone for the university, emphasizing the pivotal role sports play in molding the youth’s character and health. He expressed gratitude towards the Saudi Ambassador for gracing the event and lauded the dedication and fervor shown by students, coaches, and administrative staff. H.E. Dr. Hathal also revealed plans for an upcoming sports gala dedicated to the women’s campus of the university, scheduled from November 13 to 17.
The ceremony culminated with the Saudi Ambassador distributing awards and trophies to the victorious faculties. The event, attended by vice-presidents, deans, the DG, and a large contingent of teachers and students, was orchestrated by Dr. Ghufran Ali Khan, the student advisor, who also presented a detailed report of the proceedings.
Post-ceremony, the respected Saudi Ambassador, accompanied by the IIU President, toured the newly inaugurated food street and the advanced students’ facilitation center situated at the Directorate of Academics and Examination of IIU.
