3rd Social Sciences Lecture Series Pakistan’s Economic Framework in Comparison to other Asian Countries 

Rawalpindi, May 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):Faculty of Social Sciences (FSSH), NUMS invited Professor Dr. Ashfaque Hasan Khan Principal and Dean, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Islamabad in 3rd event of Social Sciences Lecture Series to discuss Pakistan’s Economic Framework in Comparison to other Countries in Social Sciences Lecture Series. The Social Sciences Lecture Series is a monthly interactive event initiated by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, NUMS.

The prime objective of the program is to engage academicians, practitioners, and visionaries in an intellectual discourse to promote research and critical thinking for national and social development. The forum provides an opportunity for reflection and dialogue on interests and passions of speakers to appreciate and include diversity and stimulate divergent thinking. On behalf of Professor Dr. Azam Chaudhary, Dean Faculty of SSH, NUMS, faculty members, students, and NUMS, Professor Dr. Shazia Khalid (Head of the NUMS Department of Psychology) welcomed Professor Dr. Ashfaque Hasan Khan and gave a brief introduction on his achievements. Later, she requested Dr. Khan to take the podium for his talk.

Professor Dr. Ashfaque Hasan Khan began his talk by sharing his views on Pakistan’s economic framework with a brief history of Pakistan’s economy over time. He listed out facts and figures from the 1950s till 1990 about how Pakistan’s economic growth increased in the 1960s but soon started its downfall in the 1970s. He reflected on international involvement and its impact on a country’s economy by comparing similar events occurring in different countries.

According to Professor Dr. Ashfaque Hasan Khan, numerous events over last few decades including Defeat of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, the disintegration of Soviet Union, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the End of the Cold War, the End of Iraq Iran war, Post-Tiananmen Square crisis, The satanic verses of Salman Rushdie, Francis Fukuyama, Eastern Europe crisis, Dawn of the neoliberal economic era, Emergence of US as sole power, Population explosion in Muslim countries have played a monumental role in the economic problems of our country. He highlighted on the weaknesses of the IMF program and how reliance on it can be difficult for countries to emerge out of the economic crisis. The presentation of Professor Dr. Ashfaque Hasan Khan ended with some critical and sensitive questions from the audience especially students, which were professionally addressed by the Guest Speaker.

Dr. Khan holds a PhD degree in economics from the Johns Hopkins University in USA. Dr. Khan has the distinction of being the most widely published economist of the country. He has published nine books and more than 170 articles in national and international journals of economic science. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of economics and public policy making the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan has conferred the award of Sitara-i-Imtiaz to Dr. Khan. The event ended with an appreciation note from Professor Dr. Shazia Khalid followed by the awarding of the NUMS Shield as a souvenir.
