Public rally against price hike: Workers demand drastic measures to break free of debt trap

Karachi, February 26, 2023 (PPI-OT):A public rally against price hike here on Saturday demanded of the government to take drastic measures to break out of the deadly debt trap of international lenders and salvage the sinking economy. As per details, National Trade Union Federation (NTUF) Pakistan, Home Based Women Workers Federation (HBWWF) Pakistan and youth organization Alternate arranged a joint Awami rally against the price hike that marched from the Fuwara Chowk to the Karachi Press Club (KPC). It was led by Riaz Abbasi of NTUF, Comrade Zehra Khan of HBWWF and Aqib Hussain of Alternate.

A large number of workers, youths, women and representatives of political and human rights organisations attended the rally, carrying banners and placards inscribed with their demands. They raised slogans against the slavery of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Among those who addressed the rally were including Nasir Mansoor of National Trade Union Federation, Karamat Ali of National Labour Council, Asad Butt of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Saeed Baloch of Fisher Fork Forum, Manzoor Razi of Railway Workers Union, Faheem of Karachi Union of Journalists, Wahid Baloch Siddiqui, writer and intellectual Comrade Wahid Baloch, Sajjad Zaheer of Anjuman-e-Taraki Pasand Musannafeen, Aneesa Yusuf, Parveen Bano, Nazra Bano of Home Based Women Workers Federation, Zahida Parveen of United HB workers Union, Iqbal and Barkat Ali of Alternative and others.

Addressing the rally, speakers said the ruling classes instead of cut in their own perks have opted for an economic terrorism against the masses in the name of mini-budget. They said all ruling parties and the parties that have adopted a mum over tormenting poor masses are partners in these anti-people crimes. They said it is the need of hour that the poor masses should distance themselves from these political parties and organise themselves on new political lines to cope with the situation.

They should promote their own political leadership to steer the country out of economic crisis. To break free of the slavery of the IMF, all absent landlord holdings should be abolished and this land should be distributed amongst the landless peasants free of cost. They demanded fifty percent cut in defence and administrative expenses. All edibles should be provided to citizens at reduced rates. All citizens should be given social security cover and old age pension. Bilateral relations and trade ties should be promoted with the neighbouring countries.

They said the 75 years history of Pakistan shows that the vested interests of the ruling elite have made the masses slaves of the powerful lending institutions and capitalist countries. International Monetary Fund, World Bank and other international lending entities are playing the role of a new East India Company to maintain the killer grip of the capitalist countries over hapless Pakistanis. The local rulers have been playing the role of their agents and hatching conspiracies against their own people.

They said the ruling elite comprising feudal lords, capitalists, military generals, judges and bureaucracy are sucking the blood of poor masses. They said as per the annual report of the UNDP every year 17 billion dollars’ subsidies are being given to the Pakistani elite from the annual budget, while Rs1.5 trillion are earmarked for the defence expenses and more than Rs1 trillion for luxuries of ministers, officers and their families in the name of administrative expenses. They said if the non-development expenses of defence and federal administration are slashed it would greatly help in freeing the poor masses from the clutches of poverty and hunger.

They said that the current economic crisis in Pakistan is the direct result of government corruption and anti-people policies that have resulted in about 60 percent cut in the real income of the masses during last five years. The rates of medicines have been increased by 300 percent, petroleum products by 100 percent and edibles especially wheat flour 200 percent. The bills of electricity and gas have gone beyond the reach of the masses. Rising rates of education, healthcare and public transport have broken the back of the poor people. They said the present mini-budget have virtually buried the poor masses alive. People are facing immense problems in getting two square meals, while the ministers and advisors are getting more and more benefits.

The speakers said that the ruling classes are the least concerned about the plights of the poor Pakistanis. As the masses are politically disorganised they are being burdened with more inflation and price hike. Rise in general sales tax, tariffs of electricity and gas and ending subsidies on daily use items have opened the floodgates of inflation and price hike. During the last four years, additional two Crore people have already been pushed down the poverty line, while due to the anti-people economic policies it is feared that two Crore more people would go beneath the poverty line. Due to the wrong economic policies not only the agricultural sector has been destroyed but the wheel of industry has also been slowed down, creating massive joblessness. As per an estimate due to the current economic crisis more than one million workers would be rendered jobless.

The protest rally demanded that the recent anti-people mini-budget should be withdrawn. Fifty percent cut should be made in the defence and administrative expenses. All perks including plots should be withdrawn from military and civil officers, judges and ministers. Government lands should be distributed amongst the landless Haris. Direct taxes should be slapped on the rich classes. Subsidies should be given on edibles and basic needs of life. Minimum wage should be fixed at Rs50000 per month. Social security and old age pension should be given to all citizens.

Friendly and bilateral relations should be established to all neighbours. The culprits of Baloch women’s murder should be taken to the task. All missing person including the Baloch women should be recovered and the criminals involved in these crimes should be jailed. The rally announced that the day of March 8, International Women’s Day, this year would be observed as the day against the salaried slavery and gender-based discrimination.

Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced that he would submit amendments to the law to bring the judges of the Supreme Court under the purview of NAB

Karachi, February 26, 2023 (PPI-OT):Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has announced that he will submit the amendment to the law to bring the judges of the Supreme Court under the purview of NAB, saying that a dual system cannot operate in the country. It cannot be that there is one law for the common man and another for the sacred cow. He said that it cannot be that if he is the Prime Minister of Larkana, hang him and if he is the Prime Minister of Zaman Park, the court waits for eight days to grant him bail.

Addressing the ceremony held in Karachi regarding the Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of Pakistan, the PPP Chairman said that Quaid-e-Awam Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto is the founder of the 1973 Constitution, which we all are proud of. He said that the 1973 constitution protects and guarantees every citizen his right. He said that this constitution is very beautiful, which is a reflection of Pakistan. He further said that if Pakistan is a federal country, then this constitution gives us a federal system, Pakistan is an Islamic country, then our constitution is an Islamic constitution, and Pakistan is a country of democrats, so our constitution is a democratic constitution.

Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that ever since the constitution of Pakistan, it has been continuously attacked and robbed because some forces do not tolerate that the people get their rights. He said that the nation is still bearing the burden of the losses incurred during the eras of General Zia and General Musharraf. He said that there was a period from 2008 to 2013, which seemed like the entire society had matured. He further said that I remember, the day the Eighteenth Amendment was passed, the daily Dawn headlined that Pakistan’s politicians have finally matured.

The PPP Chairman said that the period from 2008 to 2013 was a period of hope, because before that there was a lot of polarization in the country. During this period, the political parties came to the conclusion that as long as we keep fighting each other, the constitution and democracy will always be in danger and the country will not progress. He further said that Martyr Ms. Benazir Bhutto had forgotten the vengeful behaviour of her then opponents and said that we will work on the Charter of Democracy. He said that on the basis of this harmony, after coming to the government, we did not send the Muslim League (N) or other opponents to jail and when the Muslim League (N) government came, they also followed it to some extent. What did?

While recalling the progress made as a result of coordination among political parties after the Democratic Charter, Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that we could focus on the people of Pakistan, we could pass the Eighteenth Amendment, and we could bring the Benazir Income Support Program. , made the Northern Areas Gilgit-Baltistan Province, and made the province known as NWFP Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The foreign minister said that due to such coordination there was very little space for undemocratic forces, but then one had a doctrine or spirit, that a selected one was launched. The Selected was launched only to break that “harmony”. Muk Makka was also propagated. Just so that the undemocratic forces can get more space and get a proxy prime minister. There should be a prime minister who does not take any interest in the problems of the nation. Who is not interested in parliament, democracy and even economy? He should understand that he did not become the Prime Minister to see the prices of tomatoes and onions. He became the prime minister only to benefit himself and his family. He further said that the day on which he succeeded in removing the selected Prime Minister was 10th April 2023 which was the same day on which our unified constitution was approved in 1973.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that this person was brought to power because he was not only a conspiracy against the system, but also against the constitution. He said that those people say about the Eighteenth Amendment that everything has gone to the provinces. The problem of these people is actually not the Eighteenth Amendment, but the 1973 Constitution, which they have not obeyed since day one and still do not obey.

Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that Imran Khan has recognized every institution. Politics has become so divided that we cannot talk to each other. He has similarly divided the judiciary and the media. He said that if you open one channel, you see one Pakistan and another channel, you see another Pakistan. He said it has divided us so much that it has also divided the establishment. He said that we are seeing that doubt is gone, but that thought is still there. Now it is not known for how long the effects of the damage caused in these three years will continue to be felt that now it has become difficult to run the country.

The PPP chairman said that if the institution that gives justice will fight with each other, how will it give justice to the people. He said that it is being heard that it is difficult for one judge to talk to another judge. If there are two different truths on two channels, it will be fun for Invisible. We are going through a political, constitutional and economic crisis. “If we keep fighting each other, the common man will continue to suffer,” he said. The most important problem of common man is economy, inflation, hunger, poverty and unemployment. He said that if we continue to fight each other, terrorists will also continue to take advantage.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that if there were such situations in any other country, everyone would say to stop fighting and solve the problems. He emphasized that the solution too many problems faced by Pakistan is in the constitution. He said that people are still looking for the job of parliament and judiciary, but the hopes are low.

He said that it is difficult for parties like us to defend such measures with the double standard that the High Court is operating with. He said that we are still waiting for the hearing of the reference regarding the judicial killing of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, but we are not getting any response. But if the prime minister of Zaman Park has a problem in Tang, the court waits for a week and even if the petition has forged signatures, he is granted bail. He said that the double system will not work anymore and we will not tolerate it. It cannot be that if there is a government of Shaheed Ms. Benazir Bhutto, end it with an editorial in the newspaper, but if the constitution has to be changed or rewritten to save the government of Imran Khan, then do that too.

The PPP chairman said that another legislation is to be made that if anyone speaks against the army or the judiciary, he will be punished. How long will we pass the sacred cow law? He said that Pakistan People’s Party’s stand regarding NAB has always been clear that it was created for political engineering. He said that the judges do not know what is good in the NAB rules. He said that whatever amendments other parties make in the NAB law, but I myself will submit an amendment that if NAB is to be established, it should also be applied to the judiciary.

NAB should also apply to judges, whether they are serving or retired. Corruption is everywhere. He said that Pakistan People’s Party will oppose the sacred cow law. Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari paid tribute to the Jayalas for making a historic struggle for democracy and said that we made the constitution, we will save it.
