“Great Stories Begin Here” NUMS Red Ray (NR2) 

Rawalpindi, July 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):In 2020, at the crucial time period of COVID-19, students from Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences dare to initiate a community service program titled NUMS Red Ray which is lately joined by NUMS Department of Psychology students, under the mentorship of Ms. Saira Javed (Lecturer Clinical Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, NUMS). The incubation period of the program was marked with the individual efforts and donations. It was followed by the congregation of students, the common interest to serve the cause of blood donation.

The members of program have associations with different NGOs working to expand their outreach and networking. The program not only engages volunteers for donation but also facilitates transportation services for those who have mobility issues. The members allocated as student ambassador of different organization at NUMS, are given opportunities to organize awareness sessions as well as blood donation camps. The mission statement of this program is to work for the cause of blood donation to our vulnerable fellow beings who require blood transfusion for their survival and sustenance.

Blood donation is a sacred act which can contribute to save precious lives, one donation can save up to three precious lives. The activities in NK2 is led by student leader in different domains, i.e., Medical Social Worker (Mr. Hasnain Khalid, DSBS, NUMS), Public Health Social Worker (Ms. Warda Waheed, DSBS, NUMS) and Mental Health Social Worker (Ms. Mahnoor Khatak, NDP, NUMS). Initially students participated individual donation but later on the students of NUMS collaborated and worked together to improve and enhance their outreach.

Blood camps were organized for specific disease as well as for rare blood group types. Online counselling has been offered to individuals who are with different phobias. At the instances where direct blood donation is not feasible the members play their part in expanding networking so that other donors can receive the news and can contribute to donation. During the pandemic too, not only blood, but members worked for the cause of plasma donation to save the lives of those struggling with the Covid-19 complications.

This civic engagement not only encouraged maximum participation in humanitarian cause but also facilitate them learning new life skills. NR2 is in process of opening NUMS Blood Bank at AFIT. So, far NK2 team successfully facilitated 80 direct beneficiaries, around 104 indirect beneficiaries (General population) and 100 plus donors. Under the slogan of WHO, promoting health for all, NK2 is passionate to work on Sustainable Development goals (SDGS) i.e. ‘good health and wellbeing’ ‘Reduced Inequality’, and ‘Partnerships for Goals’. NK2 team will be caring forward this program under “Civic Society” of NUMS.

Fifth Syndicate Meeting of the University of Chitral held 

Chitral, July 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):Fifth Syndicate Meeting of the University of Chitral. The fifth syndicate meeting of the University of Chitral was held on 25.07.2022 under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Zahir Shah, Vice Chancellor, University of Chitral. Representatives of the Higher Education Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Higher Education Commission, the Establishment Division, and the Finance Department Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa participated in the meeting. All the points of the agenda presented by the university in the meeting were approved after a thorough discussion.

Politics and Pragmatics of Economics Talk at University of Central Punjab 

Lahore, July 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):The talk on politics and pragmatics of economics was held at the University of Central Punjab (UCP) under the auspices of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FOHSS). The event was attended by Mr Engineer Amir Iftikhar MS Economics Japan, Ex HR Head Bank of Punjab; Former VP ADBP. I have also been in many senior-level positions in the national organization. Besides faculty members, students of Economics and different departments of students attended the event.

The talk started with an introduction to the politics and pragmatics of economics. A cultural, economic approach focuses on how values influence behaviour, how things are valued in different contexts, and how values are valued or changed through time. The pragmatic perspective focuses on how matters work in real-world situations, particularly the discussions that lead to their formation and expression. Values are important; the difficult part is making them interpretable in economic conditions.

He said that it is essential for Pakistan to focus on the social economics policies so that people live a better life. Also he said that most of the people in Pakistan want to go abroad and work there, which causes a brain drain and is very harmful to the progress of the Pakistan economy. He talks about the student of Pakistan that they should focus on the social issues and work on them to make them better. In the end, the Consultant, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr Khalid Manzoor Butt, encouraged the students to organize such an event which was helpful for students to gain practical knowledge. Later, he thanked the guest speaker and presented them with a souvenir.

Remarkable rise for Abdullah, Jayasuriya in MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings 

Dubai, July 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique and Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya continue to soar in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings after splendid performances in the first Test of their ICC World Test Championship series in Galle.

Abdullah, who was declared Player of the Match for his second innings knock of 160 and has amassed 720 runs in his first six Tests, advanced 23 slots to reach 16th position with a Pakistan record of 671 rating points. The previous best by a Pakistan batter after six Tests was Saeed Ahmed’s 614 rating points and only two batters have ever had more points after six Tests – Sunil Gavaskar (692) and Donald Bradman (687).

Left-arm spinner Jayasuriya, whose 21 wickets rank him joint-third in terms of most wickets after two Tests, has moved up 11 places to 44th position with 481 rating points, the fourth highest by any bowler after two Tests. Narendra Hirwani (519), Alec Bedser (500) and Bob Massie (494) had higher rating points after two Tests.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s scores of 119 and 55 see him overtake Australia’s Steve Smith to reach a career high third ranking with a career best rating of 874 points. Babar is currently top ranked in both ODIs and T20Is and remains the only batter in the top 10 of all three lists.

Fast bowler Shaheen Afridi is another Pakistan player to gain in the latest weekly update, moving up one place to a career best-equaling third position after grabbing four wickets in the first innings. Hasan Ali and Yasir Shah have gained a slot each to reach 13th and 32nd positions, respectively.

Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal has gained 11 slots to reach 18th position after scores of 76 and 94 not out while Kusal Mendis (up two places to 47th) and Oshada Fernando (up 11 places to 58th) too have made headway in the Test rankings.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings, South Africa’s Quinton de Kock has progressed two places to fourth after his 92 not out in the third match against England that was washed out by rain, ending the series at 1-1. England fast bowler David Willey has moved up to 23rd position among bowlers.

Performances in the first two matches of the West Indies versus India series were also considered in the latest weekly update.

India captain Shikhar Dhawan, who scored a match-winning 97 in the first ODI, has moved up one place to joint-13th while Shreyas Iyer is up 20 places to joint-54th among batters. Fast bowler Mohammad Siraj is in the top 100.

For the West Indies, opener Shai Hope is up three places to 12th after his valiant 115 in the second match while fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has gained two places to reach 16th position after grabbing two wickets each in both matches.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings, New Zealand players Glenn Phillips (up three places to joint-27th among batters) and fast bowler Lockie Ferguson (up five places to 35th among bowlers) have made notable progress, as have Ireland bowlers Mark Adair and Joshua Little, who are in 43rd and 44th positions, respectively.

Babar, Abdullah and Shaheen achieve career-high Test rankings 

Lahore, July 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):

Pakistan captain Babar Azam and opener Abdullah Shafique have been rewarded with career-high Test rankings following last week’s superlative performances in the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan achieved their second highest run-chase when they scored 344 for six with Babar contributing 119 and 55, while Abdullah scoring 13 and a magnificent 160 not out.

In recognition of these performances, Babar has moved up one place to third in the latest ICC Men’s Player Rankings for Test Batters and is now the only player in international cricket to feature in the top-three across all formats, while Abdullah has vaulted 23 places to break into the top-20 for the first time in 16th position.

Babar already heads the ODI and T20I batting charts, while in Tests, he now trails second-ranked Marnus Labuschagne of Australia by 11 points. The list is headed by England’s Joe Root.

Abdullah by virtue of his 23-place leap, has now become the third Pakistan batter to feature inside the top-20. Apart from Babar, Mohammad Rizwan is occupying 20th position, while Azhar Ali has slipped six places to 24th and Imam-ul-Haq has dropped three places to 64th.

Amongst the bowlers, Shaheen Shah Afridi has continued his ascendency and has gained one place in the latest rankings following his four wickets in the first Test. The left-arm fast bowler has leapfrogged India’s Jasprit Bumrah into third position on 836 points.

This is Shaheen’s career-high ranking and compliments his No.3 position in ODIs and 12th ranking in T20Is.

Hasan Ali and Yasir Shah are the other Pakistan bowlers to move in the right direction.

Hasan, who took three wickets in the first Test, has gained one place and is now 13th, while Yasir, who claimed five wickets in his comeback Test, is now 32nd after rising one place.

Mohammad Nawaz, who took five for 88 in the second innings, has returned to Test bowlers’ rankings in 89th position.

Amongst the Test all-rounders, Hasan is 26th, Yasir 31st, Shaheen 51st and Nawaz 87th.
