DIR 101: An introduction to DIR and DIRFloortime 

Karachi, July 23, 2022 (PPI-OT):Ziauddin College of speech language and hearing sciences in collaboration with ICDL, a US accreditation institute. Ms. Mahnaz, a DIR Expert trainer, MSCCCSLP, working in USA gave the introductory training to the participants. It covered Developmental, Individual difference, Relationship-based (DIR) model, which is an established and recognized framework to understand a child’s development that was developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan.

DIR explains a child’s developmental stages, individual differences, and the role emotion and relationships have in a child’s development. Ms. Mahnaz emphasized that the DIR model is applicable for all children and can be more effective approach for intervention for children with Autism and other developmental disabilities.

Following objectives were covered in detail:

1. Identify common features of autism and other challenges of relating and communicating

2. Identify the key features of relationship-based approaches

3. Describe the 6 Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities (FEDCs) in the DIR model and potential challenges that children face at each capacity

4. Understand and describe the “I” in DIR – individual differences and how health, sensory processing, and regulatory challenges can impact a child’s development

5. Describe key principles and basic strategies of Floor time

6. Understand and articulate the role of relationship and family in the DIR model

7. Understand and articulate the essential role of affect as it is related to the D, the I, and the R.

Participants have to further attend 4 more courses to become DIR expert and after the first introductory session participants are pumped up to further continue the course done the lane and become an expert.

Honourable Vice Chancellor Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob expresses the value of Hakra Civilization

Bahawalpur, July 23, 2022 (PPI-OT):Vice Chancellor, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob has said that Hakra Civilization is the great heritage of Bahawalpur region. It is an appreciative step of Arts Council Bahawalpur to organize weekly cultured events regarding Hakra Civilization. The Vice Chancellor expressed these views while talking to Director Arts Council Bahawalpur Sajjad Hussain. He said that the Department of Archeology in the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, is working in Cholistan to excavate the remains of Hakra.

The university is also setting up a museum to preserve the relics of Hakra civilization. On this occasion, Director Art Council Bahawalpur briefed the Vice Chancellor about the cultural programs organized by the Punjab Government in the Arts Councils across the province. He said that the role of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur will be very important in organizing Cholistan Festival.

In this regard, the university’s departments of History, Archaeology, Art and Design, Saraiki, Persian, Arabic, English, Media Studies, Tourism Management, IUB DOST and Department of Public Relations have an important role. The Vice Chancellor directed that the university should take full participation in organizing the Cholistan Festival and promoting the culture of the region. Director Press Media and Publications Shahzad Ahmed Khalid, Zakaullah Program Officer Arts Council Bahawalpur and Athar Lashari, Lecturer Department of Saraiki were present on this occasion.

Inauguration of Fruit and Ornamental Plant Nursery at Baghdad-ul-Jadeed Campus, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur 

Bahawalpur, July 23, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Vice Chancellor, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob inaugurated Nursery of Fruits and Ornamental Plants at Department of Horticultural Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental. Prof. Dr. Moazzam Jamil, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental, Prof. Dr. Irshad Hussain, Dean Faculty of Education, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Naveed, Chairman, Department of Plant Pathology were also present on the occasion.

The Vice Chancellor also visited orchard areas and appreciated the efforts for successful growth of guava, dates, peach, pear, lychee, citrus and mango orchards. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nafees, Chairman, Department of Horticultural Sciences along with faculty members briefed about the production of horticultural plants at nursery. Nursery is registered with the Federal Seed Certification and Registration Department, Government of Pakistan. Mr. Muhammad Shahid Mumtaz, Deputy Director, Federal Seed Certification and Registration Department presented certification letter to Vice Chancellor.

The Department of Horticulture is producing disease free, true to type and certified plants of mango, citrus, guava, pomegranate, grapes, fig, Olive, Pear and various other fruit and ornamental plants. These plants are available for sale to farmers. Farmers interested in purchasing true to type, disease free and certified plants can contact the Department of Horticulture, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur for further information.

Sir Syed University organizes seminar on traffic rules awareness

Karachi, July 23, 2022 (PPI-OT):Centre for Guidance, Career Planning and Placement of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology organized a seminar on “Awareness of Traffic Rules and Regulations”. DIG Traffic Karachi, Ahmed Nawaz Cheema was invited as Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion DIG Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema said that the total approved strength of the traffic police is 10,000 and at present 6,000 traffic police personnel are deployed in the traffic police which is 60% of the total requirement and the traffic police is 40 percent understaffed.

Most of the police force is deployed on duties in the Red Zone, facilitating VIP movement, cricket matches, elections etc. Karachi is the country’s economic and commercial hub and the largest city of Pakistan, where the population is increasing day by day. The number of vehicles registered in the city is also increasing and the city’s infrastructure is changing.

In order to meet the shortage of personnel, Traffic Department is planning to initiate recruitment drive. To create awareness among the people about traffic rules, the department is running a comprehensive campaign in the print and electronic media and organizing seminars in the academic institutions. In addition, digital and social media including FM Radio 88.6 is also being used for this purpose.

DIG Ahmed Nawaz Cheema pointed out that the administration has installed cameras on 16 different places in the city to monitor the flow of traffic and 3.93 million challans were issued in 2021. The police department has got body cameras to record on-spot traffic violation. We are discussing with IT experts and software houses to develop a software to improve the traffic system and to make the issuance of challans against traffic rules violation transparent.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Vali Uddin said that since driving rules are rarely followed in our country, the university is very keen to work with traffic department to address traffic issues in Pakistan by creating awareness among the students about traffic rules and regulation. Heavy traffic load is causing a number of traffic issue. Smooth flow of traffic on the roads has become a challenge despite measures being taken to regulate the traffic.

Registrar Syed Sarfraz Ali said that during recent years traffic accidents claimed more life due to the reckless driving and not following the traffic rules. It is need of the hour to curb the violation of lanes and signals in order to avoid fatal accidents. At the end of seminar, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Vali Uddin along with Registrar Syed Sarfraz Ali and Mr. Siraj Khilji presented souvenir to DIG Traffic, Ahmed Nawaz Cheema.
