Protest march at GCU condemns hurtful remarks of BJP leaders

Lahore, June 18, 2022 (PPI-OT):An on-campus protest march was held here at the Government College University Lahore to condemn the blasphemous statements of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders regarding the Holy Prophet (PBUH). A large number of teachers and staff members attended the protest march from the University’s Clock Tower to Main Gate.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi led the march and addressed a demonstration at the University’s Oval Ground on the sanctity of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). He said the honour and respect of the Holy Prophet (PHUH) was a matter of life and death for the billions of Muslims across the globe. He said these derogatory and controversial remarks by BJP leaders had hurt the feelings of Muslims all around the world.

Prof. Zaidi said that we respect the religion of others, even for those we disagree with, and we would never allow a single insulting word against Islam and the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The Vice-Chancellor urged the global community to take note of such derogatory comments and severely reprimand India. BJP spokespersons including Nupur Sharma made blasphemous remarks against the Holy Prophet (PBUH), triggering a wave of condemnation at home and from the Islamic world.

HRCP demands economic stability, political rights

Lahore, June 18, 2022 (PPI-OT):On concluding its biannual meeting, the governing council of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed its concern at the alarming polarization in political discourse, which is detrimental to the cause of democracy, supremacy of parliament and constitutionalism. It is equally concerned about the ensuing economic instability, the runaway inflation and the threat of food insecurity that are disproportionately impacting the working and middle classes. Punjab, the country’s biggest province, stays in a political limbo. HRCP calls for a non-partisan consensus on crucial issues facing the country.

The Council highlighted multiple grave human rights issues being faced by the populace, including the impact of climate change evident in the recent glacial flooding in Gilgit-Baltistan, the ongoing heatwave in Punjab, the acute water shortages in Sindh and Balochistan, leading to provincial conflicts, displacement and loss of livelihoods.

It noted the worsening instances of police brutality against peaceful protestors across Pakistan with arrests of activists and political workers on anti-state charges becoming a common feature. Freedom of press is in continuous stress and journalists have been persistently targeted. The state must uphold people’s rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly instead of retaliating with unwarranted violence.

HRCP brings to the government’s notice that there is no letup in cases of enforced disappearances, particularly in Balochistan, Sindh and KP. What is worse is the uptick in enforced disappearances of Baloch and Pashtun students. It reiterates its demand to enact the law that criminalises enforced disappearances and the state must ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.

Violence against women and transgender persons showed no signs of abating. Religious and sectarian minorities remain vulnerable, with incidents such as the mob lynchings in Sialkot and Mian Channu, the attack against Shia worshippers in Peshawar, and desecration of Ahmadiyya graves, becoming more frequent. HRCP calls on the state to curb the rising tide of religious extremism, and grant the National Commission for Minorities a statutory position in light of the Tassaduq Jillani Supreme Court judgement 2014 so it may fulfil its duties.

HRCP welcomes the passage of the Sindh Student Unions Bill, and the decisions to suspend the PDMA’s establishment and carry out a review of PECA. However, seats on various parliamentary committees remain vacant, since the passage of vote of no confidence, while the NCHR and NCSW are under-funded and hence not fully functional. HRCP also questions the Council of Islamic Ideology’s statements criticising Islamabad High Court’s statements on underage marriage.

The promise to grant Gilgit-Baltistan provincial status must be fulfilled. The Council criticised the ‘discreet talks’ with militant groups in Afghanistan without taking the parliament into confidence. HRCP also demands that the state accede to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol, and pass legislation for refugees’ rights.

PAT holds ‘Call for Justice’ rallies in 60 cities

Lahore, June 18, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) took out rallies ‘Call for Justice’ on the completion of the eight years of Model Town tragedy in more than 60 cities of Pakistan including Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Multan and asked the Chief Justice of Pakistan to play his role in the provision of justice to the families of the martyrs as well as those injured during the tragic day.

A rally that was held in front of the Lahore Press Club at Shimla Pahari was attended by hundreds of workers as well as the children and family members of the martyrs. Addressing the rally, Bisma Amjad, daughter of Tanzila Amjad Shaheed, said that it was her question to the Chief Justice of Pakistan as to why her mother and aunty Shazia Murtaza were martyred; why she was deprived of the love and affection of her mother; and why she is unable to get justice despite the fact that the eight years have gone by. She said that the accused are benefiting from the pending appeals and the stay order given by the Lahore High Court, adding that they are getting acquittals from the lower courts one after the other.

The rally that started from Aiwan-e-Iqbal to the Lahore Press Club was led by MQI Lahore president Rana Nafees Hussain Qadri, PAT Lahore president Dr Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, President MWL Pakistan Dr Farah Naz, President MYL Mazhar Mahmood Alvi and President MSM Chaudhry Irfan Yousaf.

Addressing the rally, PAT Secretary General Khurram Nawaz Gandapur said that our only demand before the judiciary on the eighth anniversary of Model Town tragedy is that the stay order is withdrawn and the JIT is restored so that the stalled process of justice could be resumed. He said that the Model Town case is alive today because of the courageous role of media, and the steadfastness of the families of the martyrs and Shaykh-ul-Isla Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri.

Rana Nafees Hussain Qadri said that the societies that fail to dispense justice become spiritually and morally dead. Mazhar Mahmood Alvi said that the dispensation of justice in the Model Town case will lead to progress, stability of the country and revival of faith in the justice system. He warned in the same breath that no one would be able to stop this nation from courting more chaos and destruction in the absence of justice. Chaudhry Irfan Yousaf maintained that we have neither forgotten the martyrs nor we will.

Besides women, children and people representing all walks of life, the senior MQI and PAT leaders who attended the rally included Allama Rana Muhammad Idrees, Raja Zahid Mahmood, Mian Zahid Islam, Noorullah Siddiqui, Naeem-ud-Din Chaudhry, Ishtiaq Hanif Mughal, Shahzad Rasool, Sohail Raza, Allama Rana Farooq, Qazi Faiz-ul-Islam, Hafiz Ghulam Farid, Sidra Karamat, Ayesha Shabbir, Haji Farrukh, Naureen Alvi, Haji Zulifqar Ali, Shahzad Khan, Allama Mir Asif Akbar, Allama Rafique Randahwa, Mufti Ghulam Asghar Siddiqui, and Raja Nadeem. The mother of Shaheed Tanzila Amjad also participated in the rally and demanded justice for her Shaheed daughter.
