Mithali Raj back in top 5 of MRF Tyres ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings

Dubai, June 29, 2021 (PPI-OT): The India captain has returned to the top five of the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings after top-scoring for India with 72 in the opening ODI against England. India captain Mithali Raj has returned to the top five of the MRF Tyres ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings after top-scoring for India with 72 in the opening match of their three-match series against England in Bristol.

The 38-year-old, who has completed 22 years in international cricket, rescued her side from a precarious 27 for two but India’s total of 201 for eight was not challenging enough for England, who will be defending their ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title in New Zealand next year. Mithali, who had led India to the final of the last World Cup played at Lord’s in 2017, has gained three slots to reach fifth position after the Bristol knock. The formerly top-ranked batter returns to the top five for the first time since October 2019.

There was not much else to write home about for the India side in terms of rankings, with all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar re-entering in 97th place among batters and 88th among bowlers. Hard-hitting opener Shafali Verma, the top-ranked T20I batter, has entered the ODI rankings in 120th place after scoring a 14-ball 15 on debut.

England opener Tammy Beaumont has consolidated her top position after her player of the match effort, gaining 26 rating points to reach 791 after her unbeaten 87 while Natalie Sciver’s 74 not out sees her inch up from ninth to eight position in the latest women’s ranking update, which is carried out on Tuesdays.

In the bowlers’ list, fast bowler Anya Shrubsole has progressed three places to eighth after grabbing two wickets in the match while left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, top-ranked in T20Is, has gained four slots to reach 10th position with a haul of three for 40 that included the scalps of Mithali and Harmanpreet Kaur. Kate Cross has moved up three places to 25th.

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 to move to UAE and Oman

Dubai, June 29, 2021 (PPI-OT): The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 will be staged in the UAE and Oman due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation in India. The BCCI will remain the hosts of the event, which will now be held in Dubai International Stadium, the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the Sharjah Stadium, and the Oman Cricket Academy Ground, from 17 October to 14 November 2021.

Acting ICC CEO Geoff Allardice said: “Our priority is to deliver the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 safely, in full and in its current window. Whilst we are incredibly disappointed not to be hosting the event in India, the decision gives us the certainty we need to stage the event in a country that is a proven international host of multi-team events in a bio-secure environment. We will work closely with the BCCI, the Emirates Cricket Board and Oman Cricket to ensure fans can enjoy a wonderful celebration of cricket.”

BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, said: “The BCCI made every effort to stage the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and provide its passionate fans with a reason to cheer after a long period of gloom. However, the prevailing pandemic situation in the country meant that the health and safety of everyone concerned was fraught with risk should a tournament of this stature is held across the country. The BCCI will continue to host the tournament, which will now be held in the UAE and Oman and work closely with the ICC to make it a memorable event.”

President BCCI Sourav Ganguly said: “The BCCI is looking forward to hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 tournament in UAE and Oman. We would have been happier hosting it in India but considering the uncertainty due to the Covid 19 situation and the importance of a world championship, the BCCI will now continue to host this tournament in UAE and Oman. The BCCI is looking forward to creating a spectacle.”

Vice President Emirates Cricket Board, Khalid Al Zarooni said: “Emirates Cricket Board is honoured that the BCCI (Board of Cricket Control India) and the ICC (International Cricket Council) have entrusted us with staging and delivering the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The UAE’s reputation as being a safe country in which to host high-profile sporting events is a strong complement to our government’s unwavering commitment to implementing and monitoring effective health practices during the pandemic. Having hosted a number of high-profile tournaments in recent months our team is well-prepared and ready to mobilise to ensure the success of the T20 World Cup.”

Oman Cricket Chairman, Pankaj Khimji said, “It is indeed a great moment for Oman Cricket to be selected as a venue/host of the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. We shall leave no stone unturned to exceed the requirements of BCCI and ICC. Oman will certainly extend a very warm welcome to all the teams, officials and media in October.”

Exuberant Rizwan ready for England challenge

Derby, June 29, 2021 (PPI-OT): Mohammad Rizwan is excited and eyeing to play his role in yet another series win for Pakistan national team – who is currently touring England for a three-match ODI series and as many T20I series. While talking to media via videoconference call today, Rizwan said, “We always love playing here in England. The conditions here are very supportive for an exciting and competitive series ahead.”

Rizwan who last toured to England in 2020 and scored two half-centuries in three-match Test series is looking forward to repeat the same performance in the limited-overs series as well. Rizwan has been a regular feature of the national team since one year and the team has won six consecutive series. “Our morale is really after the recent successful series and we are hoping for a good contest against the hosts in the upcoming series.”

Under Rizwan’s captaincy, Multan Sultans have recently clinched their maiden HBL PSL trophy beating Peshawar Zalmi by 47 runs in the final on 24 June. Rizwan’s own performance played an instrumental role in helping his side winning HBL PSL 6 trophy. The right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman has scored 500 at 69.25 from 11 matches which included seven half-centuries. He was declared best wicket-keeper of the tournament for 20 scalps behind the stumps.

Rizwan who has captained the national team in the two-Test match series against New Zealand in New Zealand in 2020-21 in the absence of Babar Azam, when asked about captaining the side in future, Rizwan responded, “I have never thought about captaining the side. At the moment, I am enjoying my batting, and trying to give my hundred per cent whenever and where I get an opportunity to help the side.” When asked to comment on his opening partner (T20I) and Captain Babar, he said, “Babar is an exceptional player. As a player we have to adapt to the conditions and play as circumstances demand.

“Everyone knows about Babar’s potential, skills and his experience and he is capitalising all that stuff pretty well.” On the inclusion of his Sultans team mate Sohaib Maqsood’s in the national team, Rizwan said, “Sohaib is a good player and he can play anywhere and he has already proved it with his battings skills. Our combination is good and we are looking to give better results in the series against England starting from 8 July.”
