Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari underscored Pakistan's commitment to transitioning to clean energy in a message commemorating the International Day of Clean Energy. The President emphasized the necessity of clean, affordable, and sustainable energy for development, energy security, and combatting climate change, particularly for countries like Pakistan that are vulnerable to its impacts.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, the government has prioritized clean energy as part of its climate and development strategy, with a target of 30 percent electric vehicles by 2030 under its Nationally Determined Contributions for 2025. The government's agenda includes policy reforms, energy infrastructure modernization, and renewable technology deployment to enhance sustainable resource management and energy efficiency.
The President's message highlighted the adverse effects of air pollution in Pakistan, including traffic accidents, flight cancellations, and school closures, which underscore the urgent need for clean energy solutions. With 35 percent of the country's energy mix already derived from renewable sources, Pakistan aims to further expand this share to meet Sustainable Development Goals related to energy and climate action.
The shift to clean energy is positioned as an opportunity for economic growth, job creation, and technological advancement. President Zardari called for innovation and investment to build a reliable and sustainable energy system, reaffirming Pakistan's role in global efforts to develop and adopt technologies that protect and improve the environment.
