Lahore, October 09, 2023 (PPI-OT): The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore arranged a consultative colloquy and patent award ceremony at City Campus Lahore. UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad presided over the meeting while Chief Executive Officer Drug Regularity Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) Mr Asim Rauf, Secretary Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab Muhammad Masoud Anwar, Vice-Chancellor University of Education Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, Chairman Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan Mr Farrukh Amil and a number of stakeholders from public and private sectors across the country including academicians, researchers, professionals and representatives from pharmaceutical industries, Livestock Department officials participated in the meeting. Prof Dr Ali Raza Awan moderated the consultative colloquy.
Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad lauded the role and effort of IPO Pakistan to sensitize of UVAS researchers/innovators highlight the importance of IP by arranging many workshops, seminars and interactive sessions for the attaining of patents/rights to protect their research work. He informed the participants of meeting that UVAS gets two patents so far but 10 more patents are in process.
He also said that the aim of the consultative colloquium is to discuss topic for the development of indigenous vaccine to curb livestock disease. He said the university is playing the role of a think tank to solve livestock, poultry, dairy, meat and pharmaceutical industries issues. He said the aims of the consultative colloquium were to manufacturing indigenous, licensing and registration of veterinary biologics, scientific liaison of academia, industry and DRAP and promotion of patents in academia.
At the end of ceremony Mr Asim Rauf, Masoud Anwar along Prof Dr Nasim and Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha presented one, one lakh rupees cheques to both scientists of UVAS. Earlier Additional Director DRAP Dr Syed Zia Husnain gave detailed presentation regarding the organizational structure, vision, mission, organogram, mandate, legislative framework, regulatory prospects, international harmonization, market size, core values, quality policy, new initiatives for easy of business automation, procedure and conditions of DRAP.
Speaking on the occasion, Asim Rauf said that I appreciate UVAS effort to arrange this meeting to deliberate various issues involve in the development of local vaccine. He said it is direly needed that academia, industries stakeholder and DRAP representatives sit together and find out minimum possible standards for working and for this purpose DRAP is always ready for the assistance of stakeholders to achieve goals. He said DRAP introduced digitalize system along with operational efficiency and have detailed website where the maximum information is available for public.
Muhammad Masoud Anwar said that it is necessary for general public that DRAP create awareness among stakeholders about procedure of registration in simple language along with timeline for their understanding. Prof Talat Pasha said that local vaccine production for livestock is an serious issue in our country and UVAS in collaboration with Turkish experts established a training center for biologics production at Ravi Campus Pattoki which will not only utilize for the production of vaccine rather for the imparting of practical training to students to train them as human resource. He said after lab analysis on prevailing viruses of different diseases public and private pharmaceutical industries should prepare their own vaccines to reduce the dependency of imported vaccine.
An open discussion was held and participants of meeting put forward various suggestions and they suggested that DRAP may guide stakeholders regarding its registration procedures. They suggested 4 to 5 consultative group members must be constituted by DRAP for the assistance of stabilized working of our local vaccine production units. Further they local foot and mouth disease vaccines a national issue and its production key to boost livestock production and national economy as well.
Two of faculty members/innovators of UVAS have been awarded with national patents. The first patent is on “a pharmaceutical composition of polymeric biodegradable film for diabetics wound healing” developed by UVAS Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences scientist Dr Irfan Siddique while 2nd patent on “Process for the preparation of buffalo semen extending medium by using buffalo whole milk” secured by Prof Dr Amjed Riaz of the Department of Theriogenology.
