MNA from NA-215 Tharparkar-II Secures Seat with Only 33% Voter Support

THARPARKAR: In the recent General Elections of 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-215 Tharparkar-II secured a seat with just 33% of the registered voters' support, highlighting the characteristics of Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system. The MNA received 135,287 votes, which accounted for 48% of the 282,092 ballots cast in the constituency.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, the final consolidated result (Form-49) of the constituency revealed a voter turnout of 68%. Despite the electoral victory, the MNA did not have the support of the majority of those who voted on February 8, 2024, as 134,913 voters, or 48%, cast their ballots for other candidates. The runner-up candidate managed to secure 41% of the votes, while the third-placed candidate received 2%, with the remaining candidates collectively obtaining 5% of the votes. Additionally, 11,892 ballots, or 4%, were declared invalid.

This outcome is part of FAFEN's broader constituency-wise analysis of electoral representativeness across Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. Under the FPTP system, candidates can win seats by securing the highest number of votes, irrespective of whether they achieve a majority. This often results in elected members who do not command majority support. In contrast, a proportional representation (PR) system would allocate legislative seats based on the proportion of votes won by parties or candidates, ensuring a more comprehensive reflection of voter preferences. The data from Pakistan's GE-2024 elections highlight the gap between votes cast and representation secured across all constituencies.
