Urdu Plays Highlight Social Issues at Awaami Theatre Festival 2026

Karachi: On the fourth day of the "Awaami Theatre Festival 2026," organized by the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, two Urdu stage plays, "Bohat Ho Gayi Begum" and "Tujh Pe Qurban," attracted significant audience attention. According to Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, the event showcased performances that explored social themes through compelling narratives and engaging performances.

At 6:00 p.m., the first play, "Bohat Ho Gayi Begum," written by Syed Ali Darain and directed by Ahsan Amrohi, highlighted the journey of a courtesan seeking dignity and respect in society. The narrative depicted a man from a respectable family marrying a courtesan who escapes a brothel, seeking refuge with a character named Seth Amjad. The play's cast included Najma, Shabbir Bhatti, and others, who delivered performances that underscored the play’s reformative message.

Later, at 8:00 p.m., "Tujh Pe Qurban," written and directed by Hameed Rathore, took the stage. The story focused on DSP Aurangzeb's entanglement with criminal elements and its impact on his family, culminating in a dramatic confrontation where law and familial ties collide. The cast featured Abdullah Lala, Irma Ahmed, and others, portraying the complexities of personal and professional life within the police force.

The festival continued to draw large crowds from Karachi, filling the Arts Council's Auditorium Two and fostering a space for dialogue on societal issues through the medium of theatre.
