JAMSHORO, The University of Sindh in Jamshoro has initiated a three-day international conference focusing on the impact of urbanization, disasters, and conservation strategies on the cultural heritage of Sindh, emphasizing the need for international aid and collaboration to address climate change challenges in Pakistan.
According to University of Sindh, the conference titled “Effects of Urbanization, Disasters and Conservation Strategies on Cultural Heritage of Sindh” was organized in collaboration with the Provincial Higher Education Commission (HEC). The event, held at the Ms. Benazir Bhutto Convention Center, saw experts and researchers discussing the severe effects of climate change on Pakistan, particularly in Sindh. They underscored the urgent need for international cooperation and support for the government of Pakistan in tackling these challenges.
Sheikh Al Jamia Sindh, Professor (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Siddiq Kalhoro, addressed the ceremony, highlighting the ongoing adverse effects of climate change in various parts of Pakistan, including Sindh. He pointed out that natural disasters, exacerbated by climate change, pose an increasing threat to the region’s future. Dr. Kalhoro called on the international community and aid agencies to collaborate with Pakistan in addressing climate change and solving this critical global issue collectively.
During the conference, a paper focusing on natural disasters and response strategies was presented, emphasizing the importance of preserving rural life in Sindh. Prof. Dr. Stephen Levin from the Aga Khan University’s Faculty of Sciences discussed the global necessity for sustainable environmental resource management and the importance of understanding the consequences of climate change to mitigate natural disasters.
Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Kalhoro from the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics highlighted the profound impact of climate change on Sindh’s cultural heritage. He noted that the deterioration of paintings on ancient tombs and shrines due to climate change is a significant concern. He suggested that the recommendations made by national and international experts at the conference should be communicated to the provincial and federal governments.
The conference also featured various sessions where national and international experts and scholars presented research papers on the discussed topics. The event commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran and Naat Rasool Maqbool, followed by the playing of the National Anthem. Secretary of the conference, Dr. Abdul Razzaq Channa, extended a warm welcome to the attendees, while Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Hamdullah Kakipoto, thanked the guests at the conclusion of the opening ceremony. The conference was well-attended by teachers, scholars, and students.
