Karachi, November 04, 2021 (PPI-OT):Adding another achievement to their long list of accomplishments, the Pathology Lab of The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus has achieved ISO 15189 accreditation, becoming one of the14 labs in Pakistan to achieve this status.

The milestone is a culmination of several years of effort to align with international standards and showcase the quality of diagnostic services provided by the Indus Hospital and Health Network (IHHN). The role of diagnostics in the treatment of patients cannot be overstated. Accurate and timely delivery of a diagnostic report by clinical laboratories is the ultimate foundation of optimal patient management. The quality and efficiency of clinical laboratory services is paramount to the eventual treatment outcomes of patients.

IHHN’s scope of diagnostic services verified for ISO 15189 accreditation is the largest among the ISO accredited clinical laboratories in Pakistan. ISO 15189 accreditation involves a step-wise process of continuous up-gradation and improvement of diagnostic services at IHHN in line with international standards. IHHN had previously achieved other indicators of quality in diagnostic services, including proficiency testing by the College of American Pathologists, and Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Quality Assurance Programs and equipment calibration from ISO 17025 accredited organizations.

The ISO 15189 accreditation tells IHHN’s story of continually-striving to improve the quality of services and expand the scope of services to meet the organization’s ultimate goal – to bring the best possible healthcare free of charge to the people of Pakistan.

ISO 15189

ISO (International Standards Organization) is an independent, non-governmental international organization with the mandate to develop International Standards for organizations of all kinds. Specifically, for clinical laboratories, the organization has developed a set of quality standards called ISO 15189. Accreditation with these standards is voluntary, however, a certification that a clinical laboratory is meeting a set of international quality standards for clinical laboratories adds to the credibility of the institution. To date, only 14 clinical laboratories in Pakistan are accredited in accordance with ISO 15189 standards.
