Punjab Career Expo – GCU brings 75 employers to campus

Lahore, December 21, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Government College University Lahore on Wednesday brought more than 75 employers to its campus for students to discover opportunities, career pathways and connect with the local industry and future employers to understand their skillset requirements.

The day-long Punjab Career Expo was jointly organized by Punjab University and GCU Lahore and it received an enthusiastic and overwhelming response from students of both universities. Hundreds of graduates and final-year students flocked to the Fair to explore employment and internship opportunities in reputed international and national companies.

Besides software houses and clothing brands, a large number of banks and student start-ups also set up their stall and interviewed the students for the different posts. The special recruitment information stalls by the Pakistan Air Force and the Pakistan Navy remained the centre of attraction among all the youth.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Asghar Zaidi said that career expos are usually underrated and misunderstood in Pakistani universities; they have a wider scope than only offering jobs and internship opportunities.

“I urge even my first-year students to spend time with their future employers as they can help you network with people in your industry and become more aware of what skills your industry values in an employee,” Prof. Zaidi said.

The Vice-Chancellor said multiple job fairs are held in top universities of the world in different times of the year where students are encouraged to meet employers. Information Technology University Vice Chancellor Dr. Sarfraz Khurshid advised students to never fear rejection in their lives, especially in job interviews, saying that many students don’t even try or appear for interviews just because of this fear.

Later, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Zaidi visited stalls of all companies, and discussed with the company executives their recruitment policies and criteria. Prof. Zaidi told company executives that GCU did not only concentrate on theoretical teaching but also laid particular stress on the confidence and character building of its students so that they can perform exceptionally well in their professional lives.

“We don’t have the authority to hire professors from top universities; we have to follow specific service statutes and pay scales,” Prof. Zaidi said, clarifying that the standard salary packages are not lucrative enough to attract the best minds. He stressed the need for the training of faculty and yearly curriculum reforms.

The governor stressed that research needs to be aligned with the needs of local industry. He said problems exist but things are improving; we have to be pragmatic and realistic about bringing reforms.
