GCU Grants Special Eid-Honorarium to Teaching, Non-Teaching Staff

Lahore, April 11, 2023 (PPI-OT):The GC University Lahore announced a special Eid-honorarium for its teaching non-teaching staff as a token of appreciation for their hard work and dedication. The announcement was made by the Vice Chancellor of GC University Lahore, Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi in a message to his colleagues. The special Eid-honorarium will be equivalent to one-half basic pay scale of 2017 for the non-teaching staff and fixed amount for all the teaching staff. The move has been warmly welcomed by the staff of the University.

According to Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi, “We are pleased to offer this token of appreciation to our non-teaching and teaching staff on the occasion of Eid. They are an important part of our university and we value their hard work and dedication. This is a way for us to thank them for their contributions.” Initially, the special Eid-honorarium was granted only to the non-teaching staff. However, on the request of Academic Staff Association of the GCU, the faculty was also included in this provision.

GCU Academic Staff Association President Prof. Dr. Babar Aziz GCU and Registrar Dr. Shaukat Ali said expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, saying that the special Eid-honorarium is expected to provide some financial relief to the teaching and non-teaching staff of GC University Lahore and allow them to celebrate the festival of Eid with their families.

GCU Launches Department of Agriculture on its New Campus

Lahore, April 03, 2023 (PPI-OT):The Government College University Lahore has announced establishing Department of Agriculture on its New Campus that will offer a range of degree programs, including BS, MS, and PhD programs, in the fields of Agronomy, Horticulture, Soil Science, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Plant Pathology, and Food Science and Technology. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi said the department, approved by the University’s Academic Council and Syndicate, is aimed at modernizing the agriculture sector in Pakistan. He emphasized the importance of agriculture for sustaining life and the economy, and the need for sustainable agriculture practices to address challenges like low productivity and climate change:

“Agriculture is the primary source of food and raw materials for various industries, such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and biofuels. Pakistan is an agricultural country, with the sector accounting for a significant portion of the country’s GDP and employing a large proportion of the population. However, the sector faces several challenges, such as low crop and livestock productivity, poor soil quality, and climate change impacts. Therefore, investing in agricultural education and research is necessary for a prosperous and sustainable future for Pakistan,” Prof. Zaidi said.

Dr. Hafiz Haider is appointed as the founding chairman of the GCU Department of Agriculture. According to Vice Chancellor, the department’s primary objective is to develop and implement sustainable agricultural practices that can reduce the use of water, fertilizer, and pesticides while still producing high yields of nutritious crops. The department will also provide education and training to farmers, students, and extension workers to improve farming practices and promote sustainable agriculture. According to Prof Zaidi: “The department aims to contribute to agricultural development, food security, and rural development by conducting research and extension activities, developing and implementing agricultural policies, and promoting sustainable land and water management practices, conservation of natural resources, and biodiversity conservation”.

Graduates of agriculture programs can contribute to Pakistan’s agricultural sector by applying their knowledge to increase crop yields, improve farming practices, and promote sustainable agriculture. Agricultural students who engage in research and study have a wide range of career opportunities available to them, including becoming agricultural researchers, working in agricultural consulting, or pursuing careers in policy-making roles.

GCU introduces Four-Year BS in Turkish Language and Literature

Lahore, March 28, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Government College University Lahore on Monday announced launching a new degree program in Turkish Language and Literature. Starting in Fall 2023, the four-year BS program has been approved by the university’s Academic Council and Syndicate. Talking to media, Professor Dr. Asghar Zaidi, Vice Chancellor of GCU, laid the importance on the research and understanding Turkish culture, saying that it has played a significant role in the lives of Muslims in South Asia.

In addition to the curriculum, Prof. Zaidi said, GCU is also planning to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Turkish universities for an exchange program. This initiative will allow students in the BS program to visit Turkey and learn Turkish language at Turkish universities. Furthermore, GCU will host faculty and students from Turkey, and professors from Turkish universities will be invited for talks, seminars, and conferences at the department.

The Vice Chancellor also emphasized GCU’s strong tradition of teaching languages and literature, with premier Departments of English, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, and Punjabi. To further strengthen its academic offerings, the university is planning to initiate degree programs in other regional and global languages. “This BS program in Turkish Language and Literature will be a significant step towards strengthening the brotherly ties between Pakistan and Turkey,” Prof. Zaidi concluded. Recently, the Department of Translation Studies was also established at GCU.

GCU Honours Iconic Singer Shafqat Amanat Ali with Lifetime Achievement Award

Lahore, March 22, 2023 (PPI-OT): The eminent singer, Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by his alma mater, Government College University Lahore, at a grand ceremony held at the Bukhari Auditorium. The award was presented to the legendary musician by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi amidst captivating performances of his iconic songs by the university’s Nazir Ahmed Music Society. The event was attended by a large number of students and faculty members. In addition to receiving the award, Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan also joined the GCU music society and enthralled the audience with scintillating renditions of some of his popular singles, including the all-time classic “Mitwa.”

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Syed Asghar Zaidi highlighted that this year, Government College University Lahore recognized the outstanding achievements and lifelong work of ten distinguished alumni from various domains through the Lifetime Achievement Awards. He said these award to alumni also inspire our younger generations

Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan shared his college memories and expressed gratitude to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Syed Asghar Zaidi and the Nazir Ahmed Music Society for this wonderful tribute. He hoped that his struggle to achieve excellence in music wouldn’t stop after this award. He appreciated the policy of Vice Chancellor Prof. Asghar Zaidi of supporting his students. Shafqat was also a recipient of Roll of Honor in music from the Government College Lahore.

Tayyab Rizvi Elected as President of GCU old Ravians Union

Lahore, March 20, 2023 (PPI-OT):A new Executive Committee of the Old Ravians Union has been elected in a closely contested election held at Government College University Lahore. Syed Tayyab Hussain Rizvi, an eminent lawyer, has been elected as the new president of the Union, winning by a margin of just 22 votes. Mr. Rizvi secured 674 votes, while his opponents Mian Muhammad Ashfaq Mohlan and Dr. Farhan Ebadat Yar Khan got 652 and 36 votes. Due to the minor difference in votes, a recounting was requested, which Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi graciously allowed, but the result remained in favor of Mr. Rizvi.

Sajid Atta Goraya has been elected as the Senior Vice President with an impressive 725 votes. Shahab Basharat Bhutta and Dr. Haleema Afridi have been elected as Vice President (Male) and Vice President (Female), respectively. Sultan Nisar Soraya has been elected as the Secretary General of the union with an overall 819 votes, while Muhammad Asif Ali Khan secured 512 votes. News anchor Zohaib Saleem Butt and Sadia Sarwar secured the positions of joint secretaries. Dr. Abrar Ilahi Malik, Mehmood Saeed Rawn, Mian Sohail Anwar, Syed Tahir Hussain, Hafiz M. Nigar Ahmad, and Muhammad Ammar Saleem have been elected as Executive Members in their respective decades.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi congratulated the new executive committee of the union and expressed his hope that they would actively participate in the progress and development of their alma mater, especially in the eight projects GCU had initiated this year on the completion of 20 years of University. He added that all Old Ravians are an integral part of GCU and hopefully continue to play their role in the development of their alma mater. Prof. Zaidi emphasized the important role that alumni unions play in the growth and development of their respective universities throughout the world. He encouraged Mr. Rizvi and his team to work closely with the university administration to identify areas where they can contribute to the betterment of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the valuable experience and insights that the alumni can provide to current students and faculty members, and urged the Old Ravians to continue to support the university in its mission to provide quality education and contribute to the society at large.

GCU hosts pet show promoting animal welfare, responsible pet ownership

Lahore, February 27, 2023 (PPI-OT):The Zoology Department of GC University Lahore has hosted a grand pet show the Zoology Department at GC University Lahore Hosts Grand Pet Show Promoting Animal Welfare and Responsible Pet Ownership at celebrated the beauty and diversity of the animal kingdom while promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

The event brought together a wide range of animals, including dogs, cats, birds, and even a rare white tiger, lion, monkey and hamster which drew the attention of the students, who were thrilled to see such exotic creatures up close. Golden Eagle also remained the centre of attraction. The event was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Asghar Zaidi, who highlighted the importance of animal rights and promoting awareness about animal welfare.

The eminent faculty of 100-year-old Zoology Department of the university and invited specialists also provided guidance and advice on taking care of pets, answering questions and concerns from the public, which provided valuable insight into the science behind animal care and welfare. Pet owners and trainers showcased their pets’ impressive skills, grooming, and training. The dogs on display included German Shepherds, Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, and more, demonstrating the diversity of available breeds.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Zaidi said the pet show was an excellent platform for raising awareness about animal welfare and promoting responsible pet ownership while also celebrating the love for animals. “I’m pleased to see so many pet owners and animal lovers gathered here today, and I hope that this event will inspire others to take an interest in animal care and welfare,” he added.

Prof. Zaidi said that the GCU Zoology Department has a long and proud history of studying and preserving the animal kingdom and they encourage everyone to learn more about the science behind animal care and welfare.
