GCU holds youth leadership training 

Faisalabad, July 13, 2021 (PPI-OT):A two-day training workshop for intermediate students on “Youth Leadership and Civic Education” on Monday began at the Government College University Lahore in collaboration with Shaoor Foundation for Education and Awareness (SFEA).

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi chaired the inaugural session of the training workshop which was also addressed by Mr. Zahid Islam, the former President of FAFEN, and Mr. Raja Shoaib Akbar, the Director Programs of SFEA, as the key trainers.

As many as 23 girls from University of Home Economics (UHE) and seven boys from GCU are participating in the workshop which aimed at inculcating and developing leadership skill, citizenship and civic education among the young students.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Zaidi said this training would give the youth self-confidence and knowledge to meet different challenges of life and enhance their organizational and project management skills and ability to positively impact other youths. He also highlighted the critical need for student leaders in the Society.

GCU selection board recommends appointment of 18 lecturers

Lahore, July 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):The 80th Selection Board of Government College University Lahore has recommended the appointment of 18 lecturers in seven departments and promotions of 13 faculty and staff members of the university. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi chaired the meetings of the Selection Board which were attended by subject experts, representatives of the Syndicate and other permanent members. The Selection Board recommended the appointment of lecturers in Chemistry, Microbiology, Botany, Economics, Geography, Computer Science, English Literature and Sociology. The Selection Board also interviewed candidates for the post of Lecturer in Geography but didn’t find any suitable candidate to recommend for appointment.

The Selection Board also recommended the promotion of seven faculty members on the tenure track system, and promotion cases as Deputy Registrar, Senior Librarian, System Analyst and Deputy Controller of Examination are recommended. The recommendations of the Selection Board would be placed before the University’s Syndicate for approval.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi said from advertisement to scrutiny and written tests to interviews, 100 percent merit and transparency was being ensured in all appointments. Prof. Zaidi said these regular appointments would help improve teacher student ratio and the availability of PhD qualified staff. “Further, the regular appointments would also provide better incentives for the teachers,” he concluded.

Naat, qiraat contest held at GCU

Lahore, July 08, 2021 (PPI-OT):A seminar on Sufism in Punjabi literature was held here at the Government College University Lahore under the auspices of Punjabi Department. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi chaired the seminar which was addressed by eminent Punjabi scholar Dr. Shaista Nuzhat.

In her keynote address, Dr. Nuzhat said that promotion of Sufism was necessarily important for peace and tolerance in the society. She spoke in detail about the importance of having institutions like GCU that focus on Islamic history and Sufi education besides social sciences and natural sciences. Dr. Nuzhat appreciated the initiative as taken by the First Lady of Pakistan Mrs. Bushra Imran to establish the Al-Shazli Research Centre a Sufism (ARCS) at new campus of GCU.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Zaidi said the Sufi teachings are key to global peace. He shared the progress made about the establishment of the Sufism center, saying that the Sufis of the punjab were play key role in research at the center. Punjabi Department Chairperson Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saeed Khawar Bhutta also addressed the seminar.

Naat, Qiraat contest held at GCU

The Hazrat Hassaan Bin Saabit (R.A.) Internal Naat and Qiraat Competition was held here at the Government College University Lahore under the auspices of its Debating Society. A large number of male and female students from different departments of the university participated in the contest. Main Muhamamd Talha Farooqi secured the first position in the Qiraat contest, while Muhamamd Ihsan and Hafiz Ali Akbar stood second and third. Zainab won the first position in Naat competition, while Mariaum and Ansar secured the second position. Ali Luaqman and Muhammad Azam secured the third position. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi congratulated the winners of the competition.

GCU student wins gold medal in WUSHU championship

Lahore, July 08, 2021 (PPI-OT):Aiman Butt, a student of Chemistry at the Government College University Lahore, has secured the Gold Medal at the All Pakistan Intervarsity WUSHU Championship organized by SBK Women’s University Baluchistan, Quetta. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi congratulated Aiman Butt on her achievement, saying that sport is one of the great drivers of gender equality as it teaches female students teamwork, self-reliance and confidence. He pledged to provide maximum facilities to female sportsmen. GCU Director Sports Muhammad Waseem Akhtar and the father of Aiman Butt was also present.
