Jamshoro, The University of Sindh, Jamshoro, in collaboration with the Sindh Higher Education Commission, Karachi, has launched the 2nd International Conference on “Consequences of environmental degradation: natural disasters, socio-economic and governance challenges for Sindh, Pakistan and the way forward.” The conference, held at the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Convention Centre, brings together environmental experts and scholars from around the world to discuss the multifaceted impacts of environmental degradation and propose actionable solutions.
According to University of Sindh, the event was inaugurated by Sindh Higher Education Commission Chairman Prof. Dr. SM Tariq Rafi, with Vice-Chancellor Professor (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Siddique Kalhoro presiding. In his opening remarks, Dr. Kalhoro underscored the urgent need for effective government intervention to mitigate environmental risks and the importance of aligning policies with the recommendations of environmental experts. He highlighted the global nature of environmental challenges, pointing out that while developed countries like Japan and the USA suffer less damage due to their resources and sustainable development, Pakistan must also strive to bolster its resilience through research and expert guidance.
Dr. SM Tariq Rafi emphasized the conference’s aim to compile suggestions to enhance provincial and federal disaster management policies. He noted that the conference’s recommendations would be forwarded to governmental authorities for policy formulation. Imdad Hussain Siddiqui of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority discussed the tangible impacts of climate change on Sindh, referencing the devastating floods of 2022 as a case study. Additionally, Professor Dr. David G. Roof from Ball State University highlighted the critical role of higher education institutions in tackling environmental challenges.
The conference sessions featured a range of research presentations and keynote speeches from international and national scholars, aimed at fostering a comprehensive understanding of environmental degradation’s consequences and exploring viable solutions. The conference is set to conclude with the presentation of recommendations, marking a significant step towards addressing the environmental challenges facing Sindh, Pakistan, and the broader global community.
