SIALKOT: In the 2024 General Elections, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-70 Sialkot-I was elected with 123,495 votes, representing 42 percent of the 292,428 ballots cast but accounting for only 22 percent of the 555,752 registered voters in the constituency.
The Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) revealed a voter turnout of 53 percent. Despite the electoral victory, the winning candidate did not garner the support of the majority of voters who participated in the election on February 8. A significant 55 percent of voters, totaling 161,844, opted for other candidates, suggesting they did not favor the elected representative.
The runner-up secured 38 percent of the vote, while the third-place candidate received eight percent. The remaining candidates collectively accounted for nine percent of the votes. Additionally, 7,089 ballots, or two percent, were declared invalid, contributing to the pool of uncounted votes.
This analysis is part of a series by the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) examining the unrepresentativeness of electoral outcomes in Pakistan. It underscores how the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system can distort representation in multi-candidate contests, a common feature in Pakistan's elections. The system often leaves a majority of voters feeling unrepresented, raising questions about the legitimacy of the elected officials and potentially contributing to political instability.
