Rahimyar Khan MNA Secures Seat with Only 20% Voter Support

Rahimyar Khan: In the 2024 General Elections, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-171 Rahimyar Khan-III managed to secure his seat with only 20% of the registered voters' support. The MNA received 103,834 votes, which accounted for 43% of the 243,782 ballots cast, under Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, where the highest vote share, not a majority, suffices to win.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency reported a voter turnout of 47%. Despite the victory, the elected member did not garner majority support from those who voted on February 8, 2024, as 132,363, or 54%, cast their votes for other candidates.

The runner-up in the election secured 23% of the ballots, the third-placed candidate received 20%, and the remaining candidates collectively obtained 11% of the votes. Additionally, 7,585 votes, or 3%, were declared invalid. This election result underscores the characteristics of the FPTP electoral system, which often results in elected members who lack majority support. FAFEN's analysis suggests that a proportional representation (PR) system might better reflect a wider range of voter preferences in legislative bodies, a point underscored by the 2024 data across Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies.
