Punjab University Hosts Seminar on Environmental Sustainability in Agriculture

Lahore, The Department of Plant Pathology at the University of the Punjab held a seminar on May 27, 2024, focusing on environmental sustainability and the challenges of agriculture in the context of the climate crisis. The event aimed to enlighten students and researchers about the urgent issues facing agriculture due to climate change and pollution.

According to University of the Punjab, the seminar featured keynotes from Prof. Dr. Faiza Sharif of the Sustainable Development Study Centre at Government College University Lahore and Prof. Dr. Aisha Saleem Khan of Forman Christian College University Lahore. Dr. Faiza discussed the impact of global warming on Pakistan’s agriculture and proposed actionable solutions, while Dr. Aisha presented her findings on phytoremediation from her WWF-funded projects, which included detailed data and illustrations of plants.

The event, which also served as a platform for academic discussion and research encouragement, saw Prof. Dr. Shakeel Ahmad, Director of ORIC at Punjab University, as the guest of honor. He highlighted the importance of engaging agricultural students in research to address these critical issues. Prof. Dr. Saleem Haider, former Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, praised the Department of Plant Pathology for its initiative in organizing the seminar, noting its significance in fostering research opportunities for young scientists.

The seminar concluded with the department expressing gratitude towards the guest speakers by presenting them with commemorative shields. Prof. Dr. Tehmina Anjum, Chairperson of the Department of Plant Pathology, extended thanks to all participants and speakers for contributing to a successful and informative event.
