Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking called for a multi-faceted approach to address the evolving challenges posed by drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Pakistan. He emphasized the necessity of adapting to the changing nature of the drug threat, particularly the rise of synthetic drugs and the use of digital platforms by criminal networks to evade detection and promote drug use.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Zardari highlighted that traditional law enforcement methods must be complemented by efforts in prevention, education, awareness, and rehabilitation. He noted that digital communication technologies and cryptocurrencies are being increasingly used to facilitate drug transactions, posing new challenges to law enforcement. Moreover, social media and mobile applications are being exploited to normalize drug use, particularly among the youth.
President Zardari underscored the socio-economic impact of drug abuse, affecting not only individuals but also families and communities. He stressed that while enforcement remains crucial, society must also commit to supporting those affected by substance dependence, providing them with treatment and opportunities for recovery.
In his message, President Zardari called for a national effort involving various societal sectors, including government, education, media, and religious communities, to create a supportive environment for young people, steering them away from harmful influences. He paid tribute to those working in law enforcement, healthcare, and civil society for their contributions to combating drug abuse.
The president concluded by urging collective action to build a drug-free generation, which he sees as vital for the future wellbeing and progress of Pakistan.
