Karachi, September 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Pharmacy Services have successfully transitioned into the New Hospital Building at Korangi Campus, marking an important milestone in Indus Hospital and Health Network’s (IHHN) Korangi Campus Expansion. At present, the Pharmacy is operational within the New Hospital Building, providing high-quality pharmaceutical services. Further expansion efforts are underway to strengthen both the service offerings and the capacity of the staff.
Pharmacy Project Overview:
The Pharmacy project at IHHN is a substantial endeavor aimed at enhancing pharmaceutical care services. The primary focus of pharmaceutical services is innovating patient care. This initiative encompasses a wide range of services, including Pharmaceuticals, Med-Surg, Medical Devices, and Clinical Pharmacy services, both existing and expanded.
Pharmaceutical care plays a vital role in directly providing medication-related care to improve patient’s quality of life. Upon the project’s full completion, the Pharmacy will be well prepared to provide improved pharmaceutical care services to a larger capacity, efficiently managing the healthcare needs of patients and physicians while upholding the highest standards of safety and care.
Pharmacy Project Components:
Barcode medicine identification, to enhance medication safety and tracking, and automated dispensing of drugs for comprehensive Inventory management.
Pneumatic Tube System to facilitate rapid and secure medication transportation to various units/wards.
Satellite Pharmacies established for de-centralizing the Medication distribution system The Drug Information and Pharmacy Information Center (DPIC) was introduced to provide comprehensive drug and poison information to the health care team with evidence-based latest information for immediate patient care.
Specialized Pharmacy Services Clinics (Anti-coagulant, HEP-C, pain management, and Diabetes)
Outpatient Pharmacy Expansion: services to serve both OPD and discharge patients for take-home medication.
Repackaging of multidose Services for cost-effective and improved medication administration.
Continuous Quality Improvement and Standardization of Pharmacy SOPs and protocols
Narcotics drug management, Storage, and Monitoring
Expansion of Sterile Compounding Preparations
Enhancing the nonsterile pharmaceuticals preparation, for inpatient, ER, and outpatient demand.
Clinical Pharmacy Services to ensure the promotion of rational, safe, cost-effective drug use.
Monitoring and Reporting Pharmacovigilance and Adverse Drugs Reactions.
Pharmacy Training program: Six-month Internship training for Pharmacy graduates. One-month
Pharmacy Clarkship program and Clinical Pharmacy training for undergraduates.
Education and Research: Efforts are made to upgrade pharmacists’ clinical knowledge through Continuous Medical Education (CME) and certification, aligning with current service requirements and institutional Needs. The quarterly issuance of the Pharmacy newsletter informs about the latest pharmaceutical news and departmental achievements within IHHN Pharmacy services. Furthermore, IHHN fosters research, development, and publication activities in the field of pharmaceutical care among the Pharmacy team.
