Pakistan Urged to Prioritize Climate-Resilient Tourism

Islamabad: On the occasion of World Tourism Day 2025, President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the critical need for Pakistan to leverage tourism as a catalyst for sustainable transformation. Under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” the President highlighted both the potential and challenges facing Pakistan’s tourism industry, urging immediate action to address climate-related threats and socio-economic disparities.

Pakistan’s diverse landscapes, from the towering peaks of the Karakoram and Himalayas to the tranquil shores of Sindh and Balochistan, present immense opportunities for sustainable tourism. The country, rich in cultural heritage sites like Mohenjo-Daro and Taxila, is experiencing increased interest in adventure, religious, and cultural tourism. However, significant obstacles such as insufficient infrastructure, environmental degradation, and a lack of cohesive policy implementation continue to hinder progress.

Climate change poses a severe threat, with glacial melt and extreme weather events endangering ecosystems and historical landmarks. President Zardari stressed that for tourism to drive sustainable change, environmental conservation must be prioritized. Developing climate-resilient infrastructure, promoting low-impact tourism, and safeguarding biodiversity are crucial national objectives.

Extremism and intolerance, stemming from societal issues in the 1980s, also pose risks to the tourism sector. Addressing these challenges requires strategic vision and collective effort. By investing in sustainable tourism, Pakistan can boost local economies, create inclusive employment opportunities, and empower marginalized groups, especially in rural areas.

The government is aligning tourism strategies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on green certification and community-based tourism initiatives. However, President Zardari called for collaboration beyond government efforts. The private sector, civil society, and local communities, particularly the youth, must play active roles in transforming Pakistan into a sustainable tourism hub.

The President concluded with a call to action, urging all stakeholders to work together toward a future where tourism uplifts lives, preserves the environment, and highlights Pakistan as a premier global destination.
