Pakistan Sunni Tehreek Secretary General Criticizes Awqaf Department for Corruption and Neglect

Karachi, Allama Bilal Saleem Qadri Shami, Secretary General of Pakistan Sunni Tehreek, has expressed strong criticism of the Awqaf Department, accusing it of becoming a hub of corruption. He highlighted the department’s failure to maintain shrines and their administrative affairs, adversely affecting pilgrims and devotees, especially during the annual Urs celebrations.

According to the Pakistan Sunni Tehreek, Allama Bilal Saleem Qadri Shami questioned the Awqaf Department’s use of funds and called for a public audit report to reveal the department’s performance. He expressed concerns over the mismanagement of donations and offerings received at the shrines. Shami also called for an investigation into the department’s finances by the anti-corruption department and a public report on the offerings made by devotees. He criticized the department for failing to live up to its role and accused its officers of engaging in corrupt practices for personal gain. Shami appealed for immediate accountability of corrupt officers within the Awqaf Department and suggested a review of the assets of these officers.

In addition to these allegations, Shami raised concerns about encroachments around the shrines, suggesting they could pose security risks. He urged the police and related departments to monitor these areas closely and eliminate any encroachments to prevent potential terrorist incidents.
