Pakistan Faces Strategic Challenges Amid Global Order Transition

Islamabad: Pakistan is facing significant challenges as the global order undergoes a major transformation characterized by the decline of rule-based multilateralism and the rise of unilateral power politics. This shift is causing instability and uncertainty, particularly for countries like Pakistan, according to experts who recently convened at a session organized by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) in Islamabad.

According to the Institute of Policy Studies, the session titled "The Transitioning World: Implications and Options for Pakistan" gathered former diplomats, academics, and defense and economic experts to discuss the evolving international landscape. Key figures, including Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry and Lt Gen (r) Naeem Khalid Lodhi, highlighted the move from multilateralism to multipolarity driven by unilateralism and hyper-nationalism. These factors have contributed to global instability, with increasing armed conflicts and arms accumulation.

The experts identified various fault lines in the emerging global environment, such as the intensifying competition between major powers in the Asia-Pacific and strains within transatlantic relations. The inability of the global legal framework to ensure equality and transparency was also noted as a governance failure. In response, the session emphasized the need for Pakistan to reassess its strategic preparedness, diversify foreign policy options, and strengthen internal cohesion and governance capacity.

Speakers suggested that Pakistan should maintain transparent relationships with major powers and increase engagement with middle powers and emerging regions to expand diplomatic and economic options. They also emphasized the importance of technological advancement and innovation as critical components of national power.

The session concluded that Pakistan must navigate a period of global instability with prudence and strategic clarity. Strengthening governance, building economic consensus, and fostering national unity were identified as essential steps to safeguard Pakistan's interests in a fragmented world.
